Cold medicine for chickens????!!

[I have WHAT in my yard?]

I talked to the person I got the four chicks from and she said her chickens has the sniffles too and she got cold medicine for them. She said it was chicken cold medicine she got from a chicken website and that she out it under their wings so they would inhale it?

I couldn't keep talking to her as we were interrupted but WHAT?? What kind of cold medicine could this be?? If she believes her chickens have a "cold" then mine most likely do too!

Sorry to tell you...chickens don't get "colds." They get respiratory infections. She was proabably talking about VetRX, which is a thick, oily substance that you put under their wings, drip in their nostrils, and you can put it on the roof of their mouth with your fingertip.

please put the vetrx in all the water for the whole flock as they have been exposed from the effected birds drinking from the same waterer
aalso do put the vetrx on the heads, under the wings and down the throat of the sick birds for respiratory disease
and as you see another bird sneezing catch it and doctor it asap

What she is talking about is
VETRX
and yes here is what to do
put 1/2 tsp down each birds throat
then rub vetrx on the head and under the wings
and yes as they put their heads under the wing at night it helps them to breath
BUT the mostt important part is the 1/2 Tsp down the throat

and put 1 tsp in the drinking water for this respiratory disease

it is very good
herbs and campho oil

it originally was used to put in steamers for people breathing it for colds and rubing on the nose and chest
it was called "save the baby"
i know people who still use it for their respiratory diseases as it is all healthy stuff

the man who bought the company in the 80's makes it for all kinds of animals and fowl
very good healthy stuff

put the chickens on the \\
natural probiotic wet mash
1 qt od dry crumbles High Protein
2 qts of milk any kind even dried milk powder plus water
2 tbsp of non flavored yoguart
mix this good and feed 3 tbsp per hen twice a day(fix the amt they will need for one time)

when they eat it all in 20-30 minutes then clean the wet feeder and restock the high dry crumbles

also in the water put
the 1 tsp of vetrx and ACV
2 tbsp of applecider vinegar per gallon of wat
do these two things every day till the new feather are in
then do it once a week for life of chickens

As Wynette stated, chickens don't get colds. I also believe what your friend is referring to is the VetRX, like Glenda stated.

Be sure to quarantine the chicks and I hope the rest of your flock doesn't catch what they have.

YES PLEASE REREAD MY POST the first part I told you to put vetrex in the water 1 tsp per gallon and apple cider vinegar
for their system to get good gut flora and the vetrsx to help the sniffls
or if they get the sniffles
yes the sick chicks can and should be removed in lump sum of all that are sniffling
doctor good with vetrx and put it in water as well as ACV
each day another one comes down with sniffles put it with sick ones
the drinking waterer is where they spread the disease they have

I am sorry Glenda I appreciate the advice, what I meant was that the sick bird is not yet part of my main flock. So they do not share a water bottle. But, I will treat them anyway as you advised because I probably have already exposed them to it.

I was just stressing the matter of the birds contaminating the other birds thru waterer
I doubt that the sneezing is contagious as to the permanent life of the chicks being carriers
generally has to be coryza or MG to be carriers
but the people you got them from must have had something
give the vetrex treatment and natural probiotic wet mash a chance to help the birds

well that sounds great
as that means you can treat the sick birds and watch the other birds
how old are the other birds?
I wouold use the vetrex in the water of all the birds just for safety

My full flock is just over a year old, but I was just with them and the rooster is sounding really wheezy, so I am sure they have gotten it from me going back and forth between the new babies and the flock.....

I looked up the VetRx - and it is quite expensive!

Treating any chicken illness properly is going to be expensive. When I brought home that sick chick with Coryza that infected my whole flock last summer, it cost me several hundred dollars, lots of culling, and my whole summer. I truly feel for you.

To answer your question about them being carriers, that all just depends on what they have. Some illnesses do leave your flock carriers (Coryza is one of them unless you are diligent in culling) and others do not. It all depends on what they have.
