Hey everyone,
My ducks have laid their first eggs!

I am wondering now about the dos and don’ts of collecting eggs.

With it being winter, when I collect them in the morning they’re pretty cold. Does it that mean they need to go inside the fridge right away? What should I do when it gets warmer out?

Also how long are duck eggs good for to eat? Are fertilized eggs still good to eat?

Please let me know if there’s anything else I missed!

Thanks for your help!

I think I’ve read that cold eggs should remain cold, otherwise they will ‘sweat’ and spoil faster. Any washed eggs should be kept cold, too. Otherwise, you can safely store unwashed eggs at room temperature for about 2, possibly 3, weeks. Unwashed in the fridge can last 4+ months.

Yes! As long as they aren’t incubated, you can eat fertilized eggs just the same as unfertilized eggs.

Expect to get some funky egg shapes & sizes for a while. As long as the shell is strong, and the inside looks normal, you can eat those eggs just fine, too.
