Color of Bantam Cochin ~Cuckoo or Barred?~

Well, he is quite light. He many have another dilutor gene that is giving him that is washing out the patterns.

Cuckoo and barring both have the same barring gene. The difference is how fast the feathers grow. The fast growing feathers make wider black that white on the feathers and are often more a "vee" across the feather than a straight line the. The slow growing feathers result in the white and black to be about equal in width and a strait line across the feathers.

Yes, I would say these are cuckoo since you don't have straght lines, or equal white and black.

He's from a hatchery, so I'm assuming he's full-blood cochin. What would his offspring look like if mated with a solid or barred cochin hen? Would it be striped like either the barring or cuckoo or would it be any kind of combo? He's the only boy in our cochin pen right now and the kids wanted to breed him.

If you mated him with solid black Cochins the hens sould all come out striped. The male offspring will be a lot darker than their dad though because they will be split for barred and non-barred which produces a darker barring. The cockerels would be the same shade as the hens.

If you cross him with barred hens the pullets will come out looking the same as if crossed to solid hens, but the cockerels will be the light diluted color of their father.

Thanks, so if I'm understanding you right GaryDean26, the genetics will be similar to Tanker being a double barred? I've read that all a double barred roo's offspring will be barred and with a barred momma, the cockerels will also be double barred. What if he's mated with colored cochins? Will the chicks be a any color of barred or will one color be dominate? The chicken calculator on BYC didn't have feather legged options (and that's mostly what we have).

Thanks for your help.

Yes, I think you have the barring correct. The double Factor (DF) cockerel with be ligher in color than the hens. The single barred cockerel will be as dark as the hens.

As far as feathered feet go. If you cross a clean shanked bird with a feather shanked bird you can expect to get some feathers on the shnks, but not as think as the feather legged parent. There as special cases where you will get non-feathered leggs and when you will get heavily fethered legs off-spring, but that is not what I would espect.

Need help Cochin people is this hen a Cochin if so what kind. She is my feb. Model for my calendar And I want them

Hi there,

I have a query, is it okay to breed my hen barred Cochin to my black roo Cochin? As of now barred Cochin are very rare at our country (most breeders keep their barred, I just got lucky a breeder traded her hen for my vintage bicycle). Any suggestion which colour is appropriate to pair with her.

Thanks.
