Columbian or Light Brahma

Not sure if Maybelle is a Columbian or Light breed, anyone have a suggestion? She was just sold as a Brahma and was in a mixed/assorted hatch the farm did. Thanks!

The breed is Brahma, the variety is Light. Light is the same thing as Colombian, just a different name for it. We say light Brahma and light Sussex, and Colombian Plymouth Rock and Colombian Wyandotte, but it is the same color pattern for all.

I agree! Very interesting how Brahma's recognized colors are buff, dark, and light, yet in most other breeds it would be called buff columbian, silver pencilled, and columbian. Aways confuses people

Comb type and feet are often quite useful when sorting out breeds:

Your Light Brahma has a pea comb and feathered feet.
A Columbian Wyandotte would have a rose comb and clean feet (no feathers).
A Light Sussex (white feet) or a Columbian Plymouth Rock (yellow feet) would have a single comb and clean feet.
A Delaware would have a single comb, and clean feet, and also white bars across the black markings.

Yes, for sure. And dark Cornish are a totally different pattern from dark Brahma. So go figure.

As far as Colombian or Light goes, Light was the original name of the pattern, and is still used for English breeds like Sussex. Sometime in the early 19th century, a while after Light Brahmas were created, the man who originated this pattern in Wyandottes called them Colombian Wyandottes in honor of the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, the Columbian Exposition. So that's how we have two names for one color variety.
