Hello! I’m getting ready to build a coop and raise laying hens... every time I google something about chickens it gives me a million posts from this forum lol. Soooo... it seemed much smarter to just join in! I can’t wait to get started and meet all you awesome chicken folks - I can use any advice you have!

Hello and welcome to BYC Lisa! Have you decided what breeds and where you want to order from?

This only covers Heritage breeds so isn't a complete listing of all of the breeds available to you but a good starting point for making the determination what chicken will be appropriate for your intended purposes.

I would also recommend their Heritage Breed FAQ's(it is linked on their page) as they address some of the basic questions of breed selection there and in detail for success in your endeavor!:frow

If you include your general location on your profile, this will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have.

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

I also recommend the Topic of the Week articles Pork Pie mentioned. I have found them be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. This one may be of particular interest to you at this stage:

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
