Compare and contrast: Blue Eggs (Ameraucana, Araucana, Legbar)

We had pure from a breeder wheaten ameraucanas before (with slate colored legs). They laid a perfectly Tiffany blue egg. The girls where super nice but the roo had to go to freezer camp as he was a mean bugger.

HMM. I wonder if that is typical. I have had two roosters and neither worked out. The first was a young EE that snuck into my pullet order. Very handsome but he ran off. He got the name Romeo around my town as he was chasing other hens around ( not mine). Then I had a lovely Marans Rooster who was very sweet but always sleeping on the job. He never protected the hens much and would just hang in the chicken coop if they went out to forage. He died eventually of unknown causes in winter. Maybe rooster three would be the lucky one, or perhaps, the last attempt. I am going to research what others say about Ameraucana Roosters. It would be fun to hatch a few eggs, but then would 1/2 or more would be Roos. All my chickens are pets so that could be an issue figuring out what to do with them.

Did you raise your roosters from chicks? So many people hatching their own chicks wind up with too many roos. What you can do is get a young adult that has a nice temperament that someone is getting rid of only because they have too many.
When I have extra nice roos I'll either let them with the flock or perhaps give them a bachelor pad while I see what I can do about finding homes for them. I usually hatch only enough per year to keep my flock numbers steady or perhaps something new I want to try so thankfully I don't get too many. The ones I get are able to stay with the flock or I have made up a bachelor pad while I try to find them homes.
I will cull in a heartbeat for aggression and not offer those (which thankfully have been very few) to any one.
I'm sure others do the same thing. Hopefully you can find one of these with a good temperament who would be glad to join your flock.

I would love to have a Rooster. I will keep trying. I like the idea of a bachelor pad. Funny.

I did raise the first one from chicks. They were supposed to be hens but then you can never be 100%
The Marans I got from someone else. He was a dear. Very dignified and sweet.
Surprisingly, my neighbor mentioned the other day he misses the crowing. Usually it is the other way around with the neighbors.

I got a straight run of 20 Ameraucana chicks from a breeder 2 years ago. I ended up having 11 roos. I decided to keep 2 cockerels for my pullets and hens but unfortunately it did not work, the 2 cockerels fought all the time even though my roo-hen radio was good (18 pullets and hens) so I had to separate them and they now live in their own bachelor pen. I still have 5 Ameraucana hens and they lay beautiful green eggs which tint varies slightly from hen to hen.

These are my two roosters, they have been living in their bachelor pen for a little over a year.

This is their bachelor pen. We are getting chicks this Spring so there will be cockerels in the flock since we are getting them from a breeder, those cockerels will eventually move in with our 2 roosters

I love the idea of a bachelor pen. I wonder how many feet per bird would be good. I cant' kill anything and roos are so handsome.

That sounds so much more fun than freezer camp. I end up loving all my chicks after they hatch. The little roos are so cute.
