Consolidated Kansas

My Buff Orpingtons are maybe 7 weeks at the most considering that they may have been a few days old when I got them. I was hatching at the time so definitely between 6-7 weeks. They're supposed to all be pullets but I'm not so sure about one of them.

I got this rainbow layer at the same time as the Buff Orpingtons, she won't let me get near her.

These were supposed to be Ameraucanas but they don't look like it to me. I think they're EEs and they're 3 weeks old. These are the ones that have so much personality, or chickenality, they let me pick them up and they come to see what I have for them. They're very smart and quick to learn.

I think I better hit submit before I lose this again, it's taking forever and it's getting frustrating.

Here are the black ones that I think are so pretty, they have a green cast to them and they're so calm. I didn't realize one had so much red on her head, I like the other one better. I like the shape, how you can see distinct sections to their body, they look like a picture. Well, they are a picture, ha ha.

I have seriously have been trying to upload pics on BYC for hours and I can't believe how long it's taking. Is anyone else having issues? I have more pics, but I think I will give up for now.

Michelle, I thought starter/grower was chick feed. That's what mine eat. I got some pics for you. My chicks that age are not staying under their light completely, they have it if they want it. I got some pics of them too.

.
okay it thought i had read on a back of a bag that they needed chick feed till 10wks and then finisher/grower after 10wks but i could be wrong we got the light for them but the don't stay under all the time either. This is the youngest we've had so its so fun to watch them. just wanted to show some pictures of the kiddos. The last one of is of our Roo i think he so beautiful

Nobody's pictures are showing up for me so it must be a site problem.
I've been out working and moving birds again. I got some treated with Ivermectin so slowly I am getting them done.
I had several more chicks hatch today including 5 campine chicks. Those are the most awesome looking chicks. Unlike anything I had seen before. They almost look like they have leopard spots on them. Makes me want more of them.
Mammahen I guess what I mean by hyper would be more flighty. Both in the real sense of the word and just not an easy going chicken.
I love the red star mix (white rock and new Hamp combination- some hatcheries sell them by mixing other breeds) because they are so calm and they are egg laying machines. I ordered my chicks from Welp hatchery. No one else has what I wanted available this time of year.
I love the lavender orps. They are gorgeous. If you want to raise some I know I will be culling a few later. Mine are from imported English lines and aren't split to a BBS or anything. I know I will have a lot of roosters for sure. You might be able to cross one of them with your buff orpingtons and create some isabels eventually.
I hope to have lavender chicks and eggs by spring to sell.
I think one of the most awesome and high demand pure bred birds is a speckled sussex. They are gorgeous and are eat out of your hand super friendly naturally. They are good layers and good for eating but it takes quite a while for the roos to get full sized. Makes for more tender meat if you don't mine waiting.
I have some crosses between some buff orps and sussex. Talk about two gentle breeds. I sold some but am keeping some girls because I think they will be awesome gentle layers. Dan Powell was doing this same cross to see what he could invent color wise when he retired from chicken breeding.
I honestly think if a person had a black orpington hen and crossed it with a sussex and kept the best spotting and bred back a few times you could actually create your own jubilee orpingtons. I don't have any blacks or I would be working on that. Those jubilees just bring the highest prices and they don't seem to be going down.

Timing, yesterday our church removed all of the pews so new carpet can be installed, while the pews are out, they are putting in some new lights and ceiling fans. A long time member of the church died today... Funeral services pending.

Treva, they look like pullets to me. Be sure to keep an eye on those leg bands. I had BO's they ate like hungry pigs, they were fluffy pretty, but mine were not very good layers. I only had half a dozen of them, I've never tried them again. THANKS for sharing pictures, maybe BYC will be better with picture uploading soon!

I've got supper in a holding pattern, hoping the DH gets home soon.

Pictures are showing up now. Thanks to all of you for posting them. Cute kids too. I love seeing kids getting experience with chicks. I am trying to teach my 2 year old granddaughter about chicks when I get a chance. Last time she was here she was going to gather eggs. She would pick them up and throw them in the bucket. Needless to say the dogs had scrambled eggs. But it was fun to watch her. She is still a little scared of the chickens unless they are little babies.
Maidenwolf I'm glad the chicks are doing good.

Pretty pictures! Roos are so beautiful.

Michelle, the kids look like they're having a great time!

Mommahen, I didn't see anything that looked like a roo to me. Your rainbow layer looks a lot like my Wyandotte. Or what we think is a Wyandotte; she wasn't marked as anything in particular. We got her to keep Old Sophia company because Old Sophia was, believe it or not, a stray who showed up in our yard. It was autumn and we were lucky there were any chicks left to buy. Where did you get your Ameraucanas? I got some from Orscheln's early this spring that were marked Ameraucana, but are actually EEs. I don't breed and just wanted a more colorful egg basket, so it wasn't important to me. They are my most talkative, curious and friendly chickens.

Sarajoy-- It is very nice to connect with others near you.. As long as the hen is warm and dry the chicks should be fine. Mine are in a brooder,, well my bathtub,, and under a light for now.

Well I have a turkey issue,, lets see if anyone can help.. I have 4 toms who are fighting terribly and knocking things over, crashing thru makeshift fences, spilling food and water and stepping on smallers chickens. Will this pass or should I reduce my number of toms. I have 2 hens so I assume they ar fighting for their affections.... HELP,, !!!

Maidenwolf, I am such a newbie to chickens and am still learning as I go but I would say you have too many toms for the hens. I often hear of them being kept in pairs or trios of 1 tom to 2 hens so perhaps with Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up, it is time to be thinking about dinner?
