Convincing my mom

Very good, young lady!
There are some places on fb marketplace where one can purchase plywood, screws, metal sheeting etc, at less that a store like Lowes, Home Depot. It can work. Also, though I have lost a chicken to being egg bound, if I had searched on here sooner, I might have been able to help her. I also keep a few supplies on hand for medical care. Usually if you have a medical/health problem, someone on here has had the same problem and all are more than willing to help.
It's good that your dad is already on board.
Keep us posted.
Thanks for the tips! :)

My mom keeps saying the only reason she doesnt want then is because they carry diseases. My dad has told me he's fine with getting a few hens if my moms okay with it, but honestly I’m not entirely sure how long ill be staying here. Depending on what college I want to/can go to will most likely be the deciding factor in that, I suppose.
I feel like any other type of bird would be dirtier than anything. I never heard of that before maybe I’ll Google that

That will be the deciding factor. When you move, will your mother take care of the chickens? Or does your father want to.

Chickens can carry their own yucky diseases and they can invite vermin that carry their own yucky diseases. I’m still thinking it’s kind of short-sighted to get an animal that lives for 8 years or more so you can take care of it for a couple years then pass the responsibility onto your dad. It sounds like your dad should be the one talking your mom into it lol
If I were in your shoes I would be thinking about getting three laying hens or pullets and a small coop. And sticking to that because it will be much easier once you go to college (and forget all about chickens) for your parents to expand or just simply be done with them.

I am saying all this based on my own experience obviously. So take it with a grain of salt. I helped my mom with her chickens when I was your age but I didn’t even think about chickens again until I was almost 30. Lots of life happens after you move out. And, for me at least, settling down enough to raise chickens was not even on the radar.

If you want the chickens to live safely until they die of old age, that is a pretty big time commitment (likely 5-10 years, possibly longer). You would definitely need to have a plan for that.

On the other hand, if you are okay with butchering & eating them, you can plan to do that when you are ready to go to college or otherwise move out. That just leaves your parents with an empty chicken coop in their yard.

My dad has always wanted livestock, I’ll need to talk with him more but my guess is he’d be perfectly fine caring for them while im gone. He loves animals lol
That also sounds like a good alternative, if it works for your dad and yourself.
