(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I'm 46, and I grew up with chickens being raised by my brother; I'm only a few weeks old when it comes to farming professionally

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? This morning, we had 8. This afternoon, we sold our 6 female chicks that were 8wks old. We now have a couple 8 week old roosters, and we expect 1,500 chicks to arrive within the next 48 hours.

(3) What breeds do you have? Americana, Barred Plymouth Rock, Black Australorp, Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Red

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I enjoy getting to know the personalities of the all the animals.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Photography, travel, reading

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. Our farm is owned by my brother and his wife, and I'm just here to help. We have a chiweenie, and I'm hoping we'll have a horse or two soon.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D I first found you in a google search, and I also read many positive statements about you on Reddit and Facebook.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
1500!!?? How are you going to brood that many chicks? In a huge pole barn with hordes of heat lamps?
We have a huge basement set up with chick pens and heat lamps. . . . My bro tells my sister in law and me that we do the tech and admin and to not worry about how the other stuff gets done, so I honestly don't know!!

He's building it now . . . I'll post some pics when we're up & runnin'!
Going by the standard 4 square feet per chicken for coops, that'd be around 6,000 square feet. Granted, you may lose a few, but still....Oh my!

My sister raises turkeys commercially and that's the only place I've ever seen that many chicks at one time. They have many huge long buildings we'd call coops. Are you going into mass eggs or meat production?

I'm marketing egg layers & meat chicks; day old to adult.
