Someone told me copper marans eggs are naturally higher in omegas (3s) and lower in cholesterol. Were they pulling my leg or is this true?

As a Marans breeder, I have never heard of that. Omega 3s comes from good feed. Purina sells a feed specifically for this. The main difference that sets the Marans eggs apart is color. This color is created because the egg spends a longer time in the oviduct.

Well it's really not true. Sort of. A study was done years ago comparing Marans eggs with regular eggs to see if the Marans were more nutritious. there was a slight increase in the nutrition of the Marans eggs over the other eggs but it was so slight as to be almost non-existent. nothing you could measure on a practical everyday scale.
if you want Omega threes then you should feed your birds one of the special omega-3 supplements on the market . put it in their food and then their eggs will have more omega-3. See next post.
Best ,
Karen

Oh, I love Duluth! Normally day-old chicks are $7.00, but I'm afraid you would have to wait until next Spring, because USPS has a time frame in which you can ship live chicks.
Hatching eggs are $4.00 can be shipped year round, but you may have to wait a few weeks on that as well. My hens are moulting right now, I'm afraid.
If you are still interested, you will be the first to know when they begin to lay again.
Love the coppers. Were in Duluth, MN. What do you sell your started chicks for?
