Coryza Vaccination

Hi all.

So my poor babies got a hectic infection of Coryza. Bought in a whole lot of babies and when they arrived they had this foul smell coming off them. However I thought it was just the box they where in.

Days later they all where sneezing and rasping.

Anyways got some stuff called Coliprim from the vet and they have now all thankfully recovered. One still has a rasping sound, so think he was very very badly infected. Hoping he recovers soon.

Questions I'd like to ask are this...

Now that they have all had it, is it still worthwhile me vaccinating then against it? Read that they will be carriers for their entire lives 😥

How long after recovery is it safe to vaccinate against pox. Spring coming soon, so don't want them to now have to endure pox as well, but I also don't want to vaccinate now if their bodies are still not quite strong enough to cope with the vaccine..

Also should I do another round (5 days) of the medication to ensure its properly gone and the anti biotic works or will this not do anything for them?

Thanks all

What is your general location? Coliprim is similar to Bactrim and SMP-TMP in the US, and good for treatment of gram negative bacteria. It is good that your chickens have recovered mostly. They can get sick again with the disease during a period of stress, since it is a chronic disease. Unless you live in a tropical environment or have a lot of mosquitoes, I probably would not vaccinate for fowl pox. But if you do, and it is common in your area, it might be good to wait a bit, and make sure they are healthier. The vaccine comes in 1000 dose vials, and only is good for about an hour after reconstitution with water. It can be expensive once you have shipping, cooler, and freezer packs added to the cost.

I would probably edit your post title to “Fowl Pox vaccine for chickens with coryza.” That clarifies what you are asking cor.
Good morning. I'm actually enquiring about both... Now that they have had Coryza, is it still worth while vaccinating against it? And want to vaccinate for pox as well, but don't want to do it if it's going to be too much of a strain on their bodies right now :-(

Never had any of my fluff bums have coryza before, so this is a first time dealing with it...

In your opinion, if they have had Coryza, are they now immune? Based on what I've read, they can continue to get it again and again :-(

Thanks so much. I love in the Kwazulu Natal Midlands, in South Africa.

Climate is temperate. Not ridiculously hot like the coastal areas, but still gets very warm.

Few years ago my chickens did get pox, so think it's a good idea to vaccinate, but will definitely wait a bit then.

In your opinion, if they have hag Coryza, is it worth while vaccinating against that as well? Based on what I've read, and you're response, they could get it again and again :-(

Thanks again for your help... Much appreciated

Your birds will not be immune to Coryza. Stress will bring out symptoms again requiring treatment again and again. It would be best to cull the infected birds, wait several months. Disinfect all feeders and waterers, coops and nest boxes in the meantime. Then repopulate with "clean" non infected birds.

God that's do depressing.... Thanks so much for the honest feedback. I really do appreciate it...

I have looked around in the past when people have asked about coryza vaccines, and here in the US, they are not readily available. Since coryza is a chronic disease, the chicken would have it for life, and a vaccine would not prevent it if they have had it or been exposed. Did you get the coryza diagnosis after testing or a necropsy by a vet lab? There are a number of respiratory diseases with similar symptoms, and when considering a vaccine, the disease should be identified by lab testing. Personally, if I had a chicken with coryza, I would cull the sick bird, and get rid of the body. Most respiratory disease causing organisms only remain alive in the environment and on equipment for several day once the chicken or other poultry is gone. But many of those diseases including mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and coryza make the whole flock carriers for life. In certain countries, it can be hard to get healthy chickens in one’s area. We have members from all over the world where Newcastles and other diseases may be common. Vaccines for unexposed healthy chicks then might be worth using. Here is some info on coryza vaccine, if you can find it for sale:
