Hello all.

I know this is a question with a widely variable answer, but just looking for some total estimate answers here to get an idea to start with. I'm hoping to build something this year so I can get started with some chicks this season. I'll save you all the boring details, but funds are a little limited this year, so I'm trying to decide if this year is going to be a go or if it's going to get postponed til next year.

Ideally what I want is something in a 6'x4' coop, maybe up to a 8'x6' coop and a 6'x10' run up to a 8'x12' run. I'm probably looking to house about 3 to 5 hens. At this point I'm kind of in the planning stages on size and layout, since I have a spot I'm trying to adapt the coop/run to utilize. I'm hoping to get some ideas of cost of materials so I can kind of get an idea how realistic of an outlook I have for this year.

Again, I know prices will vary greatly depending on location, new/used, place of purchase, etc. For conversation purposes, lets just assume we're talking walk-in hardware store like your Lowes or Home Depot or similar and all new supplies. Just kind of real loose ballpark answer, what kind of budget would you expect to spend? That way I know how much to budget, so I can spend more than that anyways. Lol.

Thank you for any help you can shed on the subject. Sorry for the vague question. I'll kind of work on the space a little bit this weekend and get a better idea for my plan and kind of start sketching up an idea of what I want to build.

I’d say 8x6 coop, 10x10 covered run, all new materials...maybe $1500-ish. Curious to see what others suggest, however.

Edited to add, it obviously depends what kind of coop you’re planning to build. I’m thinking four walls and a solid roof (Amish style, if you will) as opposed to many designs I’ve seen for open coops or cattle panel hoop coops, etc.!

Just don't get carried away like I did, 3500.00$ for the coop build and run,for my starter flock of 9 birds. 2 story 20ft by 15ft coop heat and A/C, auto feed and waterer, solar power, and a music player

Greetings and welcome to you @yippee I see you joined back in 2014 and did an intro post and then here today/this evening. Need some basic information that's not provided...

like where are you located? Alaska? Mexico? Europe someplace? Climate makes a difference in coop design/requirements.

How much do you HAVE available to spend? At least knowing this we can make some realistic suggestions.

How much space do you have available to place the proposed coop and run?

ETA: How much time do you have to build this coop and run? How soon do you need it?

Seriously, if you look at the coop thread there are thousands of pictures of coops constructed for less than $100 (that for hardware), all the way up to tens of thousands of dollars.

This is the most important question to be answered first, IMO. No, we're not going to stalk you, that's why we always say general location. Go to your profile page and add your general location, this way it will always be there and we can answer questions better based on your climate.

I am blessed by climate I think I spent $50 on screws and washers to put pallets together. Sure it is a white trash looking coop but the chicken still roost in it every night. So it can't be that badly designed.

Also I think my neighbors like my coop it makes me look good in a poverty stricken region of the US. If I had built a snobby entitled $4k coop it would be a different story.

Where you're located Allen, open to air and ventilation is of paramount importance.

In the OP's original post in Dec 2014 he said he was in the DFW metro area, city property. No idea if he's sill there though... That was over 3 years ago. :idunno

Oh I am in the southern most part of texas, my coop is 50% ventilated and we have 1 freezing day per year on average. Just think where can I grow an orange orchard and you have my environment.
