So I m having a small fly problem and I was wondering if any of you have tried the country vet fly spray in you coops run and if it is safe fore chickens.

Don't waste your time over the flies, the chickens will just eat them. If a chicken gets a little taste of bug repellent, it's dangerous due to chemicals that could be harmful to those little birds.:(

If using any type of spray like that use only in a well ventilated area and keep the chickens away until the area is dry.

As mentioned, you will have chemicals that may be absorbed by the chickens.

I have to try something due to close neighbors. I ve used traps that u fill with water, caught thousands. I think all the flies in my city found those traps. I think they attract more then help my problem. So I got rid of them. I have sticky traps that fill up to fast and will end up spending way too much money on those if I have to keep using them. I ve also have order DE, hopefully that helps. I have a bug zapper light that seems to be ignored by my favorite pest. And yes, I have been cleaning the run at least twice a day to three times a day. I covered my compost pile in a trash can. I just want those flys to die and leave me and my new best friends alone!

A few days ago I read on BYC about vanilla-scented Christmas tree air fresheners being used as a fly repellent. These are the little cardboard things shaped like Christmas trees that people hang in their cars.

I picked up a 3-pack of them from a local store for about $2 and put 1 each in the coop, the run, and in the separate little coop one of our girls has to use. I hung them up where the girls can't reach them and crazy as it sounds, these little things have worked pretty darn good for us.

The coop and run are almost fly-free. The little coop has had at least a 75% reduction in flies.

I suppose these are only effective for about 3-4 weeks but they work well and the cost is certainly right so we're already planning on stocking up. Before spending a lot of money on another fly fix, you might want to try the vanilla-scented trees.

I am going to try those tomorrow. Stay tuned! Did it help right away or did u have to wait a period do time?

We put them up and checked back about 3-4 hours later and could see a difference by then. Funny thing, there were some flies buzzing around the outside of the coop door but not one in the coop itself where the tree was hung. I told hubby I might take to wearing one around my neck to keep the flies from bugging me, lol.

So onward was the war today on the flys. The vanilla scent mixed with herbs of mint from my garden, I think they have helped. I did go chemical as well with a repellent. Sprayed around the coop that was poultry safe. I do see some flys, but not the thousands that were accumulating in my small yard. Now to see if these efforts are not in vein. Hopefully it will stay fly friendly. I am also waiting on the DE to arrive and I hope that will help with everything.

We have HORRIBLE mosquito problem here in FL, did you notice if they work on them?

Oh my, that post was from 2014 when I lived in FL and was fighting flies. I don't recall if they worked on mosquitos, but the little scented trees I posted about were inexpensive enough, you could try them to find out.
