Covering for coop windows?

So I'm quickly trying to get my coop down as my girls are out growing their brooder!

I have windows on both sides of my coop, covered in hardware cloth.

The winters don't get HORRIBLE here ( Raleigh NC) but we can get some nasty wind and sometimes ice and snow.

I was trying to think of ways to cover the windows for when it is super cold. There will still be open vents under the roof.

I thought about plywood covers but then a friend came up with the idea of rubber flaps that I could lift up or put down when needed. He suggested using magnets or hooks to be able to put them on or take off as needed.

Thoughts?

You can see the windows in the picture... they will also have ventilation under the roof eaves and another large window in the front ( it gets bloody hot here in the summer... part of the reason for building in the shed. And will probably add solar fans)

Thank you in advance

Welcome to BYC. I'm an hour or so south of you in the Sandhills.

Top hinged wood, plastic, or metal would be best. That way you could prop them wide open or just crack them open a little depending on the exact weather.

After all, here in central NC we do get random 80-degree days in January or February from time to time. :D

That's too nice of a coop to put mud flats on.:) I would go with either a shutter with the same kind of wood with hinges or you could us a hook that you could make them removable and just put them on off as needed.

Nice looking coop.
Thank you for saying it is nice looking! It is made out of pallets wood and a deck that was torn down! Recycling!

I would use top hinged windows, like suggested already. This will let light into the coop, vs making it dark, using a rubber flap or plywood. I made top hinged windows for one of my coops, using 1 x 4's. You could probably come up with something using pallet wood, for window frames. Below is an article on what I used for window supports, for an idea.
