They both look like pullets, to me. There is some variation in size, and I have to say that my first Crevecoeurs from Murray McMurray were not uniform.
Good to know! Thank you. How do you like your Crevecoeurs?

That's great that he is a she! Now what are you going to call her now? She couldn't be called Archibald anymore? I did have a Basil that turned out to be a hen, but Basil stuck so well, that I couldn't change it. So she stayed as Basil.
We generally don't name our chickens, even though we love them and don't have the heart to eat them, but I'm guessing the girls will still call her Archibald and I'll still call her Peeners since that makes them so grossed out LOL.
For years I've been wanting to order from Murray McMurray, so I've got quite the idea of what to get. It's just the fact that there is so many, and I can't afford them all. The Phoenix and the Buff Minorca is ones that I'd really like to get. Along with the Cream Legbar, White Orpington and maybe a Turken (I've been really wanting to try out a Turken lately, so it doesn't really need to come from Murray McMurray.). I'd like to try out the Egyptian Fayoumises to study, and for their great health, but am not too sure. (I dream about almost all of them from Murray McMurray.![]()
)
Go for it! Did you receive their catalog? It's like chicken pornBuff Minorca and Egyptian Fayoumis are beautiful, but loud, don't bear confinement well, aren't cuddly, and may be roaming all over your neighborhood. But if none of that bothers you, they'll be great! They lay nice white to cream colored eggs and are in the egg box every day. I don't know about the others, but we have a Buff Orpington who is sweet, huge, and used to lay eggs nearly every day. I would love to have every single breed they offer if I had room for it!
I've never heard of Queen Charlotte on the Bridgerton tv series, ( or even if the Bridgeton tv series) but I'm wondering if Jazz (Queen of the Church Birds, a Black Star) acted like her like yours does. Jazz was all about style, always looking her best. (She was on January of the BYC 2020 calendar) She had this thing about getting "offered". What would happen, is I would get her to come over with treats, then I'd snatch her up. Then she'd hold her mouth open as if she couldn't believe that I'd actually dare to pick her up! It was the funniest thing ever! I've never seen anything like it before!
Your Black Star was in the BYC 2020 calendar! That's so cool! Congratulations! I'm going to look it up if it's online. Jazz sounds wonderful and funny. It sounds like she's no longer alive, so condolences. Bridgerton is an interesting period series by Shonda Rhimes (of ER and Scandal fame) on Netflix. I doubt I'd know about it, but I have teenagers, so absorb their coolness for as long as I can lol.
I currently don't have a rooster. I was thinking if I am able to order from Murray McMurray in the spring, that I might try getting a rooster, but I'm not sure yet. I've heard that the mystery chick is often a rooster, so I might wait on a rooster. I love hatching out chicks, but it always depended on some hen going broody.
If you are zoned for it and like hatching out chicks, a rooster sounds perfect! I've also heard the mystery chick is almost always a rooster, but you probably won't be able to choose the breed. If you don't mind that, it will definitely save a rooster's life since it seems most get killed. Let us know if you place a McMurray order and what you decide to get!
I've had Crevecoeurs a long time. I've had other poultry, but Crevecoeurs are my absolute favorite.Good to know! Thank you. How do you like your Crevecoeurs?

Yes, I receive their catalog! I've been getting their catalog before they even had actual pictures in it! I remember when they had only drawings of the chickens in their catalog and then I dreamed of taking pictures of all their birds for their catalog. Then at some point they slowly but surely started having actual pictures in their catalog. Then I started seeing that they were having photo contests for their catalog. Now, in the 2020 catalog, I finally got some of my pictures in it! This year I got some more pictures in it!
Congratulations! That's so awesome and you're a really great photographer. Chickens are so hard to photograph, although my daughter somehow managed to get two to sit still when she went to the studio to have her senior photos taken![]()
Yeah, from hearing what you are saying, I might have to reconsider the Egyptian Fayoumises and the Buff Minorcas. The Buff Minorcas has me sold by their pictures in the catalog. I'm used to wanderers, but the issue is that they befriend a non wanderer and get that non wanderer to wander with them. Or worse, they get the whole flock to go with them. On the Egyptians, I'm not certain that I'll go with them yet.
Our Buff Minorca and Egyptian Fayoumi are small and agile, but, yes, they do tempt the larger breeds to wander. We have a wall that drops 10 feet on one side of the yard where the flock free ranges. The small birds lure the bigger ones to jump off the wall and they often can't get back up. I don't like to drop a ladder down and get them since I don't know the neighbors well and it feels dangerous. They all said they're ok with the chickens when I asked, but still, not fun going into a neighbor's yard. I wouldn't get another Minorca or EF unless I find myself on a large farm somewhere (hope lives lol).
I've wanted a Phoenix rooster for years, but it'll probably be more exciting to get a mystery rooster. Also, if the mystery chick is a rooster, and I order a rooster, I'd have to make a decision on who to keep and who to re-home.
We have two Phoenix pullets and they are absolutely sweet and have the temperament of a lovely OEGB we had years ago. We love them, although they go broody frequently. A Phoenix rooster would be gorgeous, although the mystery chick would also be fun. Our mystery chick was a Buff Laced Polish rooster (I think). We had to rehome him and the other Polish chicks because they were being horribly pecked by the others.
Alright! I will! It's not confirmed yet if I will order in the spring from Murray McMurray, but I really hope I can. It's only January and I don't know what will happen in between now and Spring, so that's why it's not confirmed yet.
Good luck!!!

My Crevecouer line is from Greenfire Farms and all of my roos were crowing at 3-4 months. The rounded crest feathers look like pullet feathers. All the best! That would be great news, indeed! I posted photos of the two Crevecoeurs when they were younger and everyone who saw them on BYC said one was a cockerel. "He" has a very different body shape than the pullet ("his" head feathers are more like a faux hawk than the female's whose is more like a bushy mullet), has no long tail feathers, is super nervous like all the other roosters we've had, and doesn't have the devil horns we were hoping for lol. So possibly a pullet?
I'm posting some photos of "him" I just took. He's been taking a dust bath, so forgive the dandruff look. I tried to photograph "him" along with the pullet, but it's hard to see "his" profile. It would be good news, indeed, if "he" turned out to be a pullet because of noise issues (our Egyptian Fayoumi already outscreeches any backyard dog for miles). And... more eggs!
Hahaha... no offense taken! We ordered two Black Stars from Murray McMurray, but it's possible one is an Australorp. She looks slightly different than, but is as loud as, the other Black Star (who has more red feathers around her shoulders), but acts very different than our six year old Australorp (who is unfriendly towards humans and very quiet). This "Black Star" is super adventurous and feisty. She scales walls and drops down 10 feet into a neighbror's yard and has to be rescued because she can't get back up. My kids call her "Dog" because she's fearless and has "never had a bad day." Have you had both Black Australorps and Black Stars? Is there much of a difference?
Thanks for your response![]()
