Crossbeak Thread!

I just came in from making mash for Dorothy and she is just so stinking cute. She follows me around and squawks at me until I pick her up. Then she jumped on my shoulder multiple times just to hang out. She also loves when my 6 year old holds her.
For reference on how sweet she is: I checked all of my other chickens feet and they all squawked like I was butchering them 🤣
I need more like my Dorothy. Lol
That could be the Legbar in her! Some of them are like sweet little angels!!

Dorothy is precious!

Well my legbar is not friendly at all 🤣😅 she just got comfortable walking up to me. But I’ve been very patient. I didn’t even check her feet because I didn’t want to scare her away.

This is Lucy. She’s a Lavender Dream EE and is 7 months old. I noticed her beak off around 3 weeks old and as a new chicken mamma, I was terrified. But she really is the little chicken that could. She eats fermented food with Avian Health Shake mixed in. Trimming her beak really helps her eat. I think she’s laying about 1 blue grey egg a week. I wish I could tell her don’t worry about it and just be happy and healthy. 🫶🏻

Thank you! I run wet food out to Lucy at least 2x a day, and sometimes bring her her own avian health shake cup right before bedtime. She does the same as yours (I think)... runs up and perches next to me to get her special feeding. :) In this cold have you found you need to do mash with warm water? Lucy doesn't really eat once the mash gets too cold, so that's been an extra little detail to manage in this "lovely" winter weather, lol.

Dorothy doesn’t seem to mind if it’s cold luckily 😅

It’s kinda hard to see because she was moving In the pic (not to mention it’s dark), but she has crossbeak. Not nearly as severe as some of the others I’ve seen. You need a keen eye to even tell if she has it. I’d call her form of crossbeak: “least concern”.
Although, I’ve heard of cross beak worsening over time. Fortunately, I had been handed my little lady (snow) amongst a bunch of other, more sickly hens. I’ve even seen an Easter egger with crossbeak so bad, it looked like it was inflicted by another chicken rather than hereditary.
