New to posting but have been using this forum for help raising my first duck flock! I couldn’t seem to find an answer pertaining a hard almost skin like crust forming over both of my Drakes eyes? It’s semi-hard and seems to be attached to his eye lids but though his eyes may be slightly wetter than usual, no discharge and not foamy at all.

He is a 5 mo old Indian Runner. Attaching pictures of his eyes.. but he lives with 8 family members (7 girls 1 other boy) and they free roam 8am-9pm in our yard that has a creek they swim in all day. They have food always available, a pool if the creek doesn’t suffice, and a sheltered coop at night. They’ve never been sick but today he is squinting and has this weird hard funk in his eyes. He didn’t seem to mind when I was gently trying to clean with warm water, his nose is completely clear, and no discharge or breathing issues. Thoughts?? Anything helps!

Thank you! Yes.. deep enough to dive. Should I quarantine him until it clears up? Or is he okay to be around everyone else?

Before using antibiotic ointment on you little guy's eyes, you need to bathe them with salt water. You can make the salt water using the packets of salt sold at pharmacies for sinus rinses. Follow the instructions on the package. Or make your own solution using 1 teaspoon salt in a cup of boiled and cooled water. Use a separate cotton wool ball soaked in the salt water, for each eye. Its easiest if you wrap your boy in a towel and hold him against your body with 1 arm, holding his head with that hand. You then have your other hand free for bathing the crusty eyes.

It could be dust irritating his eyes; it could be viral or bacterial. The treatment is the same. Bathe the eyes with salt water, and then add a little terramycin eye ointment to the eyes. You will likely only have to do it twice daily for a couple of days. For bad infections 4 times daily for enough days to see improvement the twice daily until recovered.

He's ok around the others. He probably just poked himself in the eye with something. You can get tetramyacin at All Bird Products if you can't find it elsewhere.
