Culling Aggressive Rooster

I have a few males getting processed come spring I use a cone I put them in it, grab the neck pull it down, slice the neck but never let go of it until its completely dead otherwise they can kick out of the cone. But I eat mine so lol

Any time I need to catch a rooster/chicken I do it inside the coop so I'm not causing a scene chasing them around. At night with a head lamp if all I need to do is give them a look over and in the morning if I plan to butcher them.

When I catch to butcher I'll go in before I let everyone out, grab the bird(s) I need one by one and then go outside the coop to do the deed. Don't hesitate, just grab them by the feet and hold their wings down. I've used the broom stick method each time and I'd say it is just as fast as chopping off the head but less messy, which makes sense seeing as it is basically internal decapitation. I have thought about bleeding them like they do in kill cones but something about slitting their throat and waiting for them to die makes me squirm, I'd rather it be instant.

I don't know if you plan to eat him but if you don't then ask around to see if someone else wants to eat him. It doesn't feel right to me to just kill something because it's mean, but if that something is food then it seems less personal? I hunt so it is expected in my family to eat what you kill as a form of respecting and appreciating that animal's life. Just my 2 cents.

Sorry if this is off topic, but has anyone ever heard of killing a rooster by grabbing it by the head/high neck, lifting off the ground and swinging the body in a circle - essentially wringing the neck? I have never seen that method mentioned on here so I don’t know if it’s cruel or shouldn’t be done, but my family was telling me that their neighbor killed his rooster that way and it was instant and no mess. Just curious about it since I hadn’t ever heard of it.

It could be quick but I wouldn't attempt that personally 'cause I would think there's a possibility that the bird wouldn't die right away and it would be a more stressful death for the bird than other methods

Thanks, sounds like maybe it’s a skill, and probably wouldn’t be easily done by someone who doesn’t have a lot of experience.

Its head will come off in your hand depending on how hard you swing

True, there are certainly worse ways of doing it and if one was skilled, the bird certainly wouldn't know what hit them, it'd just be easier for someone inexperienced to mess up

And don't try to dislocate the spine at the neck by hand, as can be done with hens! The rooster's neck muscles are a lot more developed and would take a lot more strength to succeed humanely. I found this out the hard way (especially for that nasty rooster) years ago. Never again! Any other of the mentioned methods would be better, except that 'swing him around' plan.
You can wrap him, or have him in a live trap, and shoot him in the head (correctly!) with a 22 also.

Wringing the neck is a way to kill a chicken or other fowl. You swing the bird over your head and snap your wrist, sort of like snapping a whip. It breaks the neck, it is possible the head could come off in your hand.

I tried it once and it worked. But I decided I preferred my normal hatchet and stump method.
