It is a very tough part of chicken keeping. My advice, don't let them molt, and grow new feathers. I did this year, and now they all look so fancy in their new feathers...I just don't fee justified in culling them.
I will say this, there are some people that like an older bird, they don't want a lot of eggs, just some eggs. Sometimes that can help get them out of your flock.
I am out of home canned chicken broth and chicken soup... I will want to hatch chicks this spring and summer... I need to reduce the flock.
Can I do it? Yes! Have I done it? Many times. Am I dragging my feet? Yes. It happens to us all.
