Dark Egg Breeds Thread

My Partridge Penesesenca pullets are starting to lay eggs!

They look good too. They are the little ones on the left side of the picture.

With flash:

Do the Penedesenca Pullets lay really dark eggs like the Welsummers or Black Copper Marans?...And if so which line of the Penedesenca's lay the darkest eggs the Partridge Penedesenca, Crele Penedesenca or the Black Penedesenca ??? I have Welsummer's that lay pretty dark eggs ,some with speckling....Here's some of my Welsummer Eggs (Dark Eggs in carton)and my 7 month old Mixed Pullets (small eggs in basket)

Penesesenca eggs are darker than wellsummer eggs usually. They can equal marans in darkness. Emporedensa is related and lay the darkest. Partridge is usually the darkest penedesenca but there is a big variation within the average.

My Welsummers laid eggs on a par with the penedesencas until the heat killed them.
I don't think all welsumers lay that dark but mine did.

I bought Marans eggs that were nowhere close to the darkness of the penedesenca eggs.

With any breed, it largely depends on the breeder that selects for qualities.

I agree completely--Dark brown genes can be fickle.

those are nice eggs. a few of my Empordanesa I had laid very dark eggs.. of the crele , black and partridge I have generally my crele. However my Partridge girls have not been laying on and are a different shade of brown. My Crele have a wet terra cotta tint to them. I received eggs from a breeder a few years back . ( sadly non hatched ) that where the darkest eggs I have ever seen . They where from crele but in Spain Partridge and Wheaten lay the darkest. once my wife water marks the pics. I will share what the Dr. in Spain sent me.

sadly i got rid of my white Empordanesa but already have plans to get hatching eggs back. They are excellent protectors.
Here are some of what I have gotten over the years

Thanks Jason!

It really helps to see how dark the Penedesenca eggs can be.

I'm looking for a chocolate/dark brown laying bantam, any suggestions? I was looking into marans and welsummers but i don't have the space and time to purchase a bunch of chicks to grow out. I'm hoping to find some pullets I can pick up locally (SF bay area). I appreciate any help or suggestions!

Edited to add: if bantams aren't really an option that's fine too!

Welsummers and Barnevelders come in bantams but I don't know if their eggs are very dark.

Try the breed clubs to see if someone is in SF area.
