We used to have guinea pigs, whom we adored, but I hated the constant clean up. I am going to be doing DLM with my chickens (I learned about DLM here on BC), and it struck me: could DLM possibly work with guinea pigs?! DLM has been used successfully with a variety of livestock. Any opinions on this or has anyone actually done it?

If it could work, it would totally change the game in regard to cleaning up after the little poop machines, lol.

Given enough space, it may work.
When I had guinea pigs I tried this and all it did was make things worse. Far wetter, grosser and overall not effective.
But I had them in a rabbit cage.

The thing about this is that their excrement builds up quick. What you end up with is a bog in the bottom that is a fantastic breeding site for flies.

Can't say I'm willing to get guinea pigs just to try out out deep litter, but you never know. I'm thinking that if I kept them outside in an enclosed pen (like a small chicken run), with the bottom on the dirt/grass, maybe it could work. Of course, the problem with that is keeping the temperature stable. Central A/C and heat :lau?
