This question was brought up through another post and several people were unaware that grapes and raisins can be toxic to dogs so I thought it important enough to start a thread on. Grapes and raisins can cause acute renal, or kidney failure in dogs. It can only take a few for this to happen. I used to feed grapes to my little dachshund all of the time because she loves them, but have stopped because of them being toxic. I have since counted my lucky stars that nothing ever happened to my sweet little doggy due to me feeding her grapes. My dog was lucky, but there are many other peoples dogs that have not been. Here is an article that went around on the e-mail (probably still is going) and was verified by snopes as true on grapes being toxic. Please read and educate yourself if you haven't heard of this before.

yeah, I didn't know that. Our dog loves grapes, and we've given her DOZENS of them. I guess we won't be doing that anymore! Thanks for the concern, and I definately think this is a good thread to have going!!!

Other common human foods and beverages that are toxic to dogs:

1. Onions and Garlic--Both contain the toxic ingredient Thiosulphate, but it is much more concentrated in onions.

2. Chocolate.--Chocolate contains Theobromine, a stimulant and a diuretic. This can be fatal to dogs.

3. Macadamia Nuts--Macadamia nuts contain an unknown substance that is toxic to dogs.

4. Most Fruit Pits and Seeds (Contain Cyanogenic Glycosides resulting in cyanide poisoning – though the fruit itself is OK.)

5 Mushrooms--Mushrooms may contain unknown toxins which could cause liver and kidney damage.

6. Potato Peelings and Green Potatoes--Contain Oxalates which damage various systems in dogs.

7. Rhubarb leaves--Contain Oxalates.

8. Broccoli-- toxic in large quantities.

9. Green Tomatoes--Contain oxalates.

10. Raw Yeast Dough--Can rise in the dog's stomach and cause severe intestinal damage.

11. Coffee, Coffee Grounds, Tea, Soft Drinks (caffeine.)

12. Beer/Wine/Alcohol of any kind (Alcohol of any kind could lead to coma or even death.)

13. Human Vitamins--Human vitamins, especially those containing iron, can cause damage to the lining of the digestive system as well as cause kidney and liver damage.

14. Persimmons (Persimmons can cause intestinal blockage)

15. Sugar-Free Foods (Sugar-free foods containing Xylitol have been found to cause liver failure in some dogs.)

16. Nutmeg (Nutmeg can cause tremors, seizures, and central nervous system damage.)

17. Excessive Fatty Foods (Excess fatty foods can cause Pancreatitis.)

18. Avocado (All parts of the avocado and avocado tree are toxic to dogs.)

19. Human baby foods (Often contain onion or garlic powder.)

20. Hops (used in home brewing)--Unknown toxin causes panting, increased heart rate, elevated temperature, seizures, and death.

21. Grapes and raisins--Grapes and raisins contain unknown substance which is toxic to dogs. It damages the kidneys.

(Most of this list I gleaned from www.peteducation.com and www.animalpetsandfriends.com)

(edited because I had two number three's...DUH!)

BROCCOLI: There has been a bit of confusion where broccoli is concerned. Broccoli is very good for dogs, however, if the daily intake exceeds more than 10% of the animals diet – problems can occur. The toxic substance is isothiocyanate and can cause gastrointestinal irritation.
NOTE: Broccoli toxicity was first noted in dairy cattle raised in California. When there was an over abundant broccoli crop, it was fed to the cattle. Problems may have occurred because cattle have rumens and digest things much more thoroughly, therefore taking in more of the toxic substance.

I give my dog a piece of broccoli once in a while. she loves it. It is only toxic if it exceeds 10% or more of the daily diet.

Some more:

Turkey skin
Raw eggs
Liver
Raw meat and poultry

Although I feed my dogs dogfood, I have heard wonderful things about the BARF diet which includes raw bones and meat.

To each their own, I have done a raw diet and have done a total veggie diet for my dogs....they did wonderful on both but its high maintanence when you have 6 dogs LoL

Most things are only bad in large doses and ANYTHING could cause an allergic reaction, so its best to exercise caution with anything new.

Garlic can help rid a dog of fleas and some ppl swear by it but others say its bad for them.

Avocado oil is good for dogs but since you can't just get the oil, its best to leave the whole thing alone LoL

I have heard ppl say if you give a dog raw meat it will make them aggressive...total BS. If someone doesn't want to feed their dogs raw, they need to stop hiding behind the myths and just say 'ewww. thats gross' bc thats what it usually is LoL

Garlic does help rid a dog of fleas! You can sprinkle garlic powder on their dog food and they won't ever have a flea again. I don't see anything wrong with feeding garlic. The only things I have ever watched out for is chocolate, which everyone knows is a big NO NO, and now the grapes and raisins. Like you said, to each his own.
