I have some growing in my flower bed (for birds). I put some in the run for the chickens (removed from the flower pod and some still on) and they haven’t touched it. I’ve been removing any leftover seeds and such (so as not to attract rodents) and then trying again the next day.
Is it because they don’t know what it is? Or does the shell have to be removed?

When I first introduced them to it, they weren't very interested. It takes them a while to figure out what's good and what is not. Now, as soon as I let them out of the run in the morning they make a beeline for the bird feeders and scratch around under there until all the seeds spilled by the cardinals, titmice, chickadees, and other birds are cleaned up.

That’s good to know. I will keep offering them to them. I plan on letting them free range with supervision once they get acclimated to their new set up (I just got them Friday). I have to clean up my bird feeding area -especially before winter sets in. So, if they do it for me later on, I will be super excited!

People like to think that every chicken in the world is exactly the same. They are not. Some have different preferences as to what they eat. If I put corn or cabbage in the run it’s not a wild feeding frenzy. It will eventually disappear but neither are at the top of their list. Sometimes it takes them a while to try something. That happens a lot with mine. If I have patience they will eventually try it, then is sometimes does become a feeding frenzy.

Some people like to feed their chickens BOSS. BOSS is fairly high in protein, often around 20% which makes it a favorite for some people. They like to cram as much protein into their chickens as they can. It’s also a favorite for some people that show chickens. As the name implies Black OIL Sunflower Seeds it’s pretty high in oil. That oil really makes the feathers shiny. I personally believe in feeding everything except their regular feed in moderation, but it really doesn’t take much to get a real benefit in shiny feathers from that oil.

My Birds are Beautiful without Boss...Shiny feathers..Great weight....

Oops....Double trouble...:th

I have come to realize that not all chickens are the same. I read that they love tomatoes. Threw one in from the garden and they pecked it, but that was it. I had read enough on here about BOSS that I was excited to give them some from my flower bed and they turned their nose up at it. :D
I also wonder if because they were free ranging before that they just haven’t tried all of these new foods yet. I’m just trying to make sure they are happy birds.
