I have 16 chickens, so it’s hard to tell, but I think my buff Orpington is sneezing or maybe coughing every once in awhile. It sounds like a fast little squeak.
I noticed it about 3 days ago and then at least once a day while I'm futzing with something in their coop.
Is this something I need to do something about instead of just making a note of it? I have three buffs so I’m not sure which one it is (unless it’s all of them).
Here are my coop details in case anyone asks…
The chickens just started laying about 3 weeks ago. But maybe mot all. I’m getting about 5 eggs a day.
I am in Vermont. It is very cold currently. The night is going to 0°. They are in a coop that has plenty of ventilation (all the soffits are wide open). It’s not insulated or heated (because it doesn’t need to be). I do the deep litter method. Currently I have about 6 weeks of bedding in there. I stir it up on warmer days.
The food is inside and layer pellet with some herbs that I put in. The water is outside. They have access to a 10x16’ run plus the underneath of their coop that is 12x8. This stays clear of snow so it’s often their preference. The run is half covered but snow blows in sideways. I shovel a path to their water in the morning (although I’ve seen tracks to the water if the snow is not too deep). I’ve just ordered some plastic to tack up on the east side to see if they like that protection.
I’d love recommendations for this sneezy chicken in case she’s sick and not goes south quickly. Also to protect the rest of my flock.
