Today when i went outside to feed my birds i heard a very strange sound and didn't have a clue where it was coming from. Then i looked around at my neighbor's backyard and noticed they had a peafowl that was making that sound. I never heard or seen a peafowl before but from where i could see it they look quite beautiful. I myself have pheasants and I'm sure pheasants and peafowl are closely related to each other. I was wondering if it was a male or female i know the male peafowl have more color to them and are prettier than the females, but if that peafowl my neighbor has did make a few calls does that mean its a male?

Thanks!!

If it sounded like something out of a tarzan movie , i would say male, if it sounded like a goose honking it could be either one, mine make goose sounds when they get startled.

I am new to peas so this is just what i have learned from mine.

LOL My hen honks like a goose when she sees me coming and runs to the fence pacing to get to me. My male is really quiet and shy...

Thanks everyone for your replies!!

I'm pretty sure its a female, she did sound like she was honking. Maybe by spring if my neighbor still has the peahen, I'll ask if he wants me to hatch some peafowl eggs, she's going to need a male or company. Do you think she'll honk or make more calls come next spring if she's alone?

My 3 year old sure made a neat sound as she made her escape from the pen and flew into the creek behind my house yesterday. Ironic only because I was putting up topflight netting to make sure that very thing would never happened, and she slipped through the small crack by the door that I hadn't secured yet.
