Do I have to wash the egg shells?

We scrub every egg because some chickens sleep in the nest at night with the eggs and soil them. Is it okay to soak the eggs in water before cleaning them?

Thank you,
Jim

My sister has slight OCD. I giver her a dozen every week. this week she opened the container and asked if i scrubbed them. I told her that i gently wipe them down.
She then asked me to use a POTATO scrubber on them next time. Looked at her oddly and said - yea i will get right on that.

I wash all my eggs, just hot water and gentle scrubbing with my fingers. They don't last long enough to worry about length of storage.

The reason for cleaning eggs is not to protect the egg yolk and egg white but to prevent the spread of germs that a dirty egg will do.

There is a product called OXINE that is used as a disinfectant for anything to do with cleaning chickens and their eggs. I use in our water system to keep out the slime and other bacteria that could be present in standing water.
Here are a few pics of the water system. The OXINE is mixed at a rate of one ounce per 30 gallons of water. I got it on ebay.
The label says its also used to clean eggs. We just go our first egg yesterday!

I only wash my duck eggs when the ducks mucky em. The chickens hardly ever do that. Its actually safer not to until just before you use them because like someone said the hen puts a coating on them that keeps out bacteria... if you wash them that goes away. The stores wash them because people get OVERLY germaphobic. But they arent as healthy for you either are they
