I have guineas, and they pick mates for life and don't breed w/ another female besides their mate.

Will peacocks mate with all the peahens, or do they pick mates and breed with only that one? I got curious and wondered..thanks.

No, I dont think they do. When I was talking to the breeder I am getting my peafowl from, I told him that I wanted diffrent breeds, and he said that, that would be ok but they would all interbreed.

That is what I though, but I wanted to be sure!

They may not pick mates for life, but I am sure they have their favorites. Pip my two year old peahen is the favorite in the pen. The two peacocks are always wanting to display for her. Today Pip was on one side of the pen and Dragon would display for her and she would go to the other side and Alto would start displaying for her. Pip has mated with both peacocks though, so they sometimes might not even stick with the same male for one breeding season.

MinxFox, I agree. My oldest male and oldest female want to be together every breeding season, but he breeds with other females as well. Last year I had them in separate pens and they moaned to each other through the fence, so I moved Sweet Pea in with Big Bird. These two sleep next to one another every single night. When one goes into the barn, the other follows. They're kind of like a happy older couple and they are most comfortable when they are together. Two of my other IB hens are their daughters.

I don't think guineas mate for life- mine sure dont... My females far outnumber the males and all eggs are fertile. I hope peafowl dont because I only have one mature male.
