I am wondering being new to chickens if roosters also make chicken noises? I guess they all Peep when they are little or else we would know right away who were the girls or the boys... but when they get their teen and adult voices in do roosters make a fuss like the chickens or do they only crow....

THanks!
Krista

Mines always talking to the girls & always crowing as well. I use to check on them at night. Now I just turn a light on & listen for the crow.

Yes, the roosters do make chicken sounds other then crowing. As adults they will make a sort of growling sound deep in their throat when they see something that may mean danger. (like a hawlk) They also "say" something that sounds like a fast high pitched "doot, doot, doot, doot", when they find food and they want to share it with their girls. They also have a version of the "laying song" that they do whn they are freaked out. Sorry I'm not very good at explaining what the sounds sound like. Hope that helps!

Both my roosters make a sound like a very high-pitched whine that lasts for a full minute sometimes. I have yet to figure out what it means, but they seem to be communicating to the hens.

Also they do a loud "bok-bok-bok-BOK!" when they're alerting to danger. My roo Penrod is continuously vocalizing, never quiet for a minute. Yes, he crows, too.

When a young cockerel is learning to crow, it can sound like a cross between someone gargling and clearing their throat. It's quite comical.

My roo makes a dozen or so noises: a warning bark-type for his ladies when he senses danger, a wooh-erk when he's happy with a new treat, a sort of growl when one of the dogs gets too close, even a soft purr-churk when the chicks are around. As a Cochin, he's a pretty quiet guy when it comes to crowing - he seems to save that for danger. Otherwise, its chatter, clucks and assorted chook vocalizations.

My silkie boys are just starting to crow and it is hysterical. Sounds like they have laryngitis, that is, when they can get a full crow out! and they talk just as much as the girls do

I can't find the article online, but I once read an article (think it was in backyardpoultry magazine) that claimed roosters have up to 50? vocalizations. The interesting part was that they have a different vocalization for each type of predator, including seperate ones for aerial predator and ground predator.
