Do you recommend electric fencing?

I'm considering installing an electric fence around part of the yard with the coop. We're having a problem with an opossum that we just can't trap. It's killed a few chickens and we've reinforced our coop so hopefully that won't happen again, but i was thinking of getting the fencing anyway.

Does anyone use electric fencing and recommend it?

Electrified poultry fencing would be easiest although not cheapest route for use of electricity. If the cheaper methods using wire or ribbon are used, then you will have pay close attention to gaps varmints might try to get through to avoid shock. Some coons will tolerate a shock ot get at good eats so make certain fencing is good and hot as well as so contact will require multiple zaps if critter is to pass. Once going route of electrified fencing, you may as well invest more in your bird confinement to make so critters can not get at birds. That route is usually cheeper if only a couple coops are involved.

I Definitely Recommend Electric Fencing, My Mom was into chickens Long before I was & that's what she Used. It really did help cut down on the Loss of Eggs & Chickens, & the only Chickens to continually fly over it were the light weight such as Easter eggers or Salmon Faverolles, the rest of them learned to respect it. Coyotes,Opossums & Ratcoons all learned to Respect it as well!

It dose not work on Snake how ever.

You will not be able to count on fencing to keep snakes out. Occasionally a snake might be killed like a fox is occsionally killed by traffic but that does not provide control. In my time with electric fencing, occasionally a snake would be harmed but not enough to effect distribution or abundance of snakes.

I use the poultry plus fence from Premier, and highly recommend it. I have a 100X100' fenced in area that cost less than half of what I've read some people have paid for a wood framed, hardware cloth covered run, a fraction of that size. At over 7000V, I don't think a snake would make it into my area either.

Thanks everyone! Premier was where we were looking so I'm glad we're on the right track. I know the electric fence may seem a bit extreme for a back yard flock of four chickens smack dab in the middle of the Jersey Shore, NJ but when something kills half of your birds and little kids are involved, it's a small price to pay.
