Does a Prairie Bluebell Egger 100% always lay a blue egg?

Hi all. I have a 5 month old Prairie Bluebell Egger. She is squatting every time she sees me. I’ve been getting an egg that could possibly be from my black Astralorp. It really doesn’t look like her eggs but it’s a light tan and hers are a light brown and I know color glitches can happen. I sure hope it’s not from my prairie bluebell because I got her for their beautiful blue eggs. My new girls are: 2 Polish, an olive egger, the prairie bluebell egger and a lavender Orpington. The Lavender Orpington will have light brown eggs but I don’t think she’s about to lay yet. They are all 5 months old. I did read somewhere that although Polish should lay white eggs, now and then they will lay light brown.

Anyway, my main question is if sometimes a Prairie Bluebell Egger will sometimes lay brown eggs. Mine does have a pea comb.

Thanks. I’ll post a picture of the egg in question. This is the third egg to get with that dark spot on the side.

The second picture is another egg like in the first picture next to a for sure egg from my black Astralorp. First pic is today, pic of two eggs is 2 1/2 weeks ago - first time I saw an egg like this. (the two were not laid on the same day). I only have these 5 chickens and 4 2 year old girls, one being a black Astralorp.

I checked Hoover's site, being a cross between Araucana an White Leghorn, they shouldn't carry any brown pigmenting genes. My guess is another girl is giving you those. If a second Gen or further down the line missed getting a blue egg gene copy. She would lay a white egg.

There are some charts on here about what egg shell abnormalities mean, that would be a good place to look for tour dark rings on those eggs. I've had some of those, but just off and on. It's possible there were two eggs in progress at the same time. I've had some of those laid off the roost at night 🤷‍♀️

I first noticed my Prairie Bluebell squatting on July 14. Today is July 22. Googling I read that once they squat they lay within the week. It’s been 8 days. So would that mean she has laid and if I don’t have a blue egg by now then one of the brown eggs is hers? I saw her in the nest today throwing shavings on her back. When I went back she wasn’t in the nest and there was no egg. I later got a small brown egg today but I don’t have evidence it was her.

So funny - when I see other people asking these same questions, I think to myself “just wait a few days and you will know”. But when it’s me, I understand. It’s hard to wait! 🤣

It's so hard to wait! Hmm, well, I guess if there's no blue egg in the next 4 weeks or you bust her laying a brown egg... 🤔 I'm curious though, please update!!!

If I had only waited a couple days I would have had my answer. But now I have the answer and I’m so pleased!

Today I stalked my girls! My Astralorp and Prairie Bluebell kept taking turns going into the nest. I looked so many times, each time one would leave. Finally after the PB was in alone for a while and left I looked and found this small blue egg on the coop floor where she made herself a little nest in the shavings. If I hadn’t been looking hard I may have missed it! My Astralorp sat in the nest quite a lot today but didn’t lay an egg. I’ve noticed this several times before. She’s 2 years old. IMG_6645.jpeg

It's perfect! Congrats on your first PB egg!
:woot

And now we know :celebrate

Thanks for your support and interest in my dilemma (or obsession)! Happy for the outcome! Enjoyed the anticipation (sort of!)

Was fun to watch her today. She would run to the coop (like she thought the egg was about to pop out!). She’d stay a while and leave and soon after run back! Kept it up until the egg was laid. It was an exciting time!

The excitement of the first eggs never fades! And you had the added intrigue of the egg color mystery :celebrate

Chickens are just fascinating, their instincts are so strong (in most breeds 🤣 maybe less so with silkies :lau)
