Just wondering if anyone here belongs to the Livestock Conservancy. I check it out every once in a while to see what heritage chicken and rabbit breeds are on the endangered list.

What I have been planning was getting some Buff Orpingtons to raise for meat and eggs and I thought they were on the list. I thought someone had told me that or, heck, maybe I dreamed it because they aren't on the list at all but my mom's favorite birds are, the Dominiques or as my mom calls them, Dominekers. She was raised with them and they are her favorite chicken. They are for meat and eggs both and are docile. Just not as friendly as Buffs are though. Gggrrr, decisions, Decisions, Decisions.

I wonder if it's a sign.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here belonged and could talk to me about it.

I was interested in it at one point, but emailed them with some questions and they never got back to me. I was not going to pay all that money for an organization that wouldn't even email me back and that didn't have any activity in my place. Getting a hold of some of the animals is also hard. I wanted Standard American Chinchilla rabbits and Barred Holland chickens. It took me months to find suppliers and I paid good money just to have animals die or not breed. But I guess that's the name of the game. I'm more interested in Heritage breeds now that are more common and have stood the test of time.

Yes, I'm a member. Most of the birds I raise and breed are heritage. In addition to what's in my signature, I've also got Barred Hollands. I'm not on their breeders list as I'm still building my stock. Yes, it is a pain raising endangered breeds and it's difficult to find genetic diversity. Another group out there working on heritage breeds is the Sustainable Poultry Network, but they are mostly focused on Delawares from what I've seen.

If you want meat, I am not sure Buff Orpingtons are a good choice, unless you are very patient. They tend to build the frame first, then fill in. I may be missing something, but we're you just wanting a member of the Livestock Conservancy to tell you if Orpingtons were not common?

No, Actually I just had a question on what being a member of the Livestock Conservancy entails.

And another, I wanted to raise a dual purpose heritage bird that was on the Conservancy list. I was just surprised that the Buff wasn't on it because I thought it was. I guess I dreamed it.

But everything is fine now. I have decided to go with the Dominique.

If memory serves, the orps were on the study list until the last census. Membership basically entails paying your dues and filling out your profile. You can choose to be in their breeder directory or not.
