Does anyone know ANYTHING about Dixie Rainbow chickens? Please Help!!???

Hi

I just got 8 dixie rainbow chicks like 3 days ago. They're about 1 week old. I was going to get Buff orpingtons, but the place that sells the chickens sold out and aren't getting any

more:'( Anyway, the rainbow chicks were the only females there, so, I tried to do some research on the breed, but there wasn't much about them. All I know is that they're a dual purpose breed and no 2 chickens look alike! I am wondering if any of you have had any experience with this breed? Are they going to be bullies to each other? Rainbows are the only breed I have in my flock right now so i'm just wondering if they'll get along with each other. Are they cold hardy? Are they friendly to people? I know that it depends on how they were raised but in general are they friendly/docile? I read somewhere that they lay around 280-300 eggs a year and that seems like a LOT for a chicken breed that isn't on the "top egg laying chicken breeds" list. I also read that someone has the breed and they are very aggressive to people!!?

If anyone has ANY kind of information about them, I would GREATLY appreciate it!!!

I'm pretty sure they are hatchery hybrids bred more for meat (aka Pioneer and Red Ranger) but they have been reported to be excellent layers. They don't have the grow out problems if Cornish crosses and pretty docile temperaments. Based on their size and possibility of Orp lineage, they're probably pretty cold hardy.

Dixie Rainbows (also called Pioneers) were developed to be more of a meat bird though they can be kept as layers. They will be big birds. Do you know where the store got them from? The only places I know of that have them only sell them straight run.

I got them from T.S.C. and THEY said they got them from Hoover's Hatchery. I went to Hoover's website and I agree with you, I only saw them selling straight run. The people and Tractor Supply said they were pullets though....I guess I'll find out!!!

I got 2 Dixie Rainbows this time of year. 1 turned out to be a Rooster which I had to rehome, but my hen grew to be a beautiful large girl. She did fine in the cold winter. However, she died during the extremely hot days we had in the early part of the summer.

I bought 25 Dixie rainbows 6 months ago from Hoover hatchery they sent 26 and all survived, 14 were Roosters that i had processed at a USDA facility at 12 weeks they grew fast and weighed 3.8 to 5.6 pounds after processing, the hens started laying at 23 to 24 weeks and i have had 4 double yolkers from 9 eggs so far, they are large hens and very friendly, i think you will be happy with them.
