Does anyone know where to buy Saxony ducks?

Hi everyone,

My family lives in Michigan. My daughter is in 4-H and really wants Saxony ducks. However we have zero clue on where to buy show quality or them period.

Can anyone give advice on the best place to buy them?

Have you looked at the buy sell trade forum? I am trying to remember who has Saxonies.

Holderreads sells Saxony ducklings. We also got some hatching eggs from bluecamas here on BYC and they just started hatching 2 days ago!
Have you checked the breeder list, or even Craigslist? Sometimes they sell them on CL. If not, we're in WI and our ducklings just hatched...

Ours are not show quality, but they are also not a recognized show breed (yet). But if you want some, I'm pretty sure you could find someone in the buy/sell/trade section that might live closer to you, since we live in the very Northwest WI and I doubt you want to take a roadtrip?!

I bought mine from David Holderread. I have no complaints and all but maybe one turned out to NOT BE show quality. You will be paying about 9 dollers a duckling and he sell big ones in the fall. You may or may not find some for 4-H this year but you can try. I have some but do not know if I can give up a pair yet. Maybe I can but I will have to see what I get in my first clutch this week.

We got plenty now and more coming. So I am just looking forward to seeing what we end up getting from Holderread as I think we have 3 females and one male saxony so far. The other is still hatching

Think well before you adopt a baby duck. They live for longer than a few Easter days, they really make a LOT of mess, they can be really loud and they can definitely not be house broken, yet you can get diapers for them.
Also, you should never just get ONE duckling. They don't like to be alone since they're flock animals. At least 2 would be better.

If you're still serious, have room and are prepared for some long duck love, then you can always check here on buy/sell/trade or free rehoming or even in your local Craigslist. Right now even in our neck of the woods they have tons of ducklings for sale!

We ended up ordering from Holderread. Then, all of a sudden after watching Craigslist for approx. two yrs an ad was just posted this week. Since we have not received our order we decided to drive over an hour to get them. We just got back from picking them up. Yeah! My daughter is so happy she can show them this year.


Wildsam, what do you mean the saxony breed is not recognized? Another 4-H kid emailed me copies of the APA standard for them. Our county only allows APA breeds which fit standard, so I hope they are. Please, if you know something we do not, pass it on. Thanks

I might confuse them with the Ancona ducks, so right now I'm not quiet sure if it was the Saxonys not being able to be shown. There is a standard out, I know that, but I thought I just read it yesterday on here somewhere. Could be wrong tho and it was on a different breed thread... Oh all this confusion! Lol
