Theirs a big difference between a desert pizza with fruit and a normal pizza with pineapple. One is acceptable, the other is a disaster.

Technically tomato is a fruit so if fruit is unacceptable on pizza then so is pizza sauce. Peppers are also fruit and many people enjoy peppers on their pizza.
Aside from that, sweet and salty are a tried and true combination. The sweetness of the pineapple complements the saltiness of the pizza hence why pineapple tastes great on pizza
