Dog Attacked Chicken

I’ve washed it out with saline.
We sprayed with vetericyn spray.
We also have silver honey.
I’ve seen that you both are helpful with advice on care for injured chickens. @Wyorp Rock and @Eggcessive

Poor Girl!
It's good that you cleaned it and have applied ointment to the wound.
I'd leave it open, I would not wrap it or try to close it. Wounds like this are dirty even if you clean them well.

Hopefully this will eventually close up on its own, it will take time, there's a lot of fat exposed so it will take time for this to granulate.

I'd get some Chlorhexidine to have on hand just in case the wound starts to have an odor. Swab the wound, don't flush. With a wound like this. The skin is loose and anything to rinse with will accumulate down inside the skin.

Keep her separated out until she heals completely. Keep working on hydration and see that she's eating. Her neck will likely become sore and stiff, so placing her food/water up off the floor will be easier for her to reach.

Thank you very much. I’m going to get Chlorhexidine to have on hand. When you’ve used this do you dilute it as I’ve seen both us/no as I heads down the Google rabbit hole. Is this ok or necessary to use with silver honey or neosporine antibiotic ointment?

Her water is raised and I’ll get another dish holder to do the save with her food. Makes sense that her neck would become stiff as it heals. Going to pick up electrolytes to add to her water. I’ve got scrambled eggs made up to put with her feed this morning.

Thank you both!

No, don't let it scab. Infection can set in under the scab. Just keep flushing it good twice a day and keeping it moist with the neosporin. It should heal.

Thank you @BigBlueHen53

Here’s a random question… as she heals should I take her out to the yard to let her peck and forage under supervision & within limits. Thinking her being in a crate inside for a however long is needed won’t be ideal for her in the long run.

Also do injuries like this impact egg production? She is a regular layer and so want to be aware of what is/is not normal. Again no clear direction on Google.

I may be overthinking this, but appreciate the help & guidance.

Follow the directions on the bottle for dilutions.
Use the Chlorhexidine to clean/swab the wound if it starts to have an odor or have pus.

Keep the wound most with the honey/ointment.

Yes, you can take her outside to enjoy fresh air, sunshine and to move about. Do be aware that she may try to take a dust bath, this can cause a sticky dirty mess on a wound covered in ointment. Been there done that...
But it's good for them to be out and see/visit with their flock if possible (supervised) or to bring in a couple of buddies to visit and share a nice treat and hang out.

She may continue to lay eggs or she may lay another egg or two then stop production. Hard to know.

Thank you @Wyorp Rock.

Heyhey laid an egg yesterday. Will keep an eye on production and get her some fresh air. She’s seems to be doing good, just was not thrilled about getting the wind changed last night. I figure that’s normal.

We’re going to start supervised “field trips” outside today.

Update on HeyHey…
She’s doing well after 3 days. She’s eating, drinking, laying, cuddling & churning and has taken a field trip to hang with the rest of the ladies. Thank you all for your help & knowledge.

Hi,

How is HeyHey doing now? She is so cute. That must have been so scary and difficult for you but good job caring for her ❤️

@Chickies321
Thank you for asking. It was quite frightening, but thanks to lots of help and guidance we were able to give her the care she needed. She’s back out with the flock, some feathers missing, but no loss in the pecking order and doing great.
