dog castration question.

Personally I don't believe neutering is a good idea for males unless he is crytorchid or older with prostate issues. It greatly, greatly increases the risk of bone cancers, while only preventing a very, very rare form of testicular cancer. You are putting your dog at a much higher risk of cancer and orthopedic issues of the hips if you choose to neuter.
But as far as banding. It is done quite often, especially in farming communities. And it is safe.

As I said I don't believe it is in the best interest of the dog to neuter unless there is a crytorchidism. And in that case, a vet must do it because it is a major surgery. The peta crowd have lied to the public in order to further their own agenda. It is sad that so many dogs are arthritic due to their nastyness.

I wouldnt do it...for several reasons. But the 2 biggies are: It IS animal cruelty and illegal, The risk of medical complications is too high and it will end up costing you WAY more in the end.

I read some of the links. That was very interesting.

I'm not going to get into the whole legal or not, animal cruelty or not thing. The OP asked if it could be done and I answered honestly. ALL of our dogs are fine. None suffered from infections or had gaping wounds. This took place around 4 yrs ago. We haven't whelped another litter since. Alot of the males were later rehomed to hunting families going on to be Grand Night Champions. We hunt with the owners and dogs are great. I do live in a small farming town where it is accepted to band and if you tried to call and report such a thing you would probably be laughed at. Yea I live in one of those kinda redneck/hick towns. We have quite a few coonhounds(all are fed twice daily and vaccinated yearly so don't start on that) and when the males don't sell or we can't give them away for whatever reason we can't just shoot them or dump them somewhere. So we have to do some form of litter prevention. We cannot afford to have them all neutered($120 EACH) or have the ability/space to build pens for them individually(hot/hunting coonhounds have low tolerance for other dogs unless hunting). So would you rather I have them banded or just dump them, possibly in your neighborhood? Cause thats what would have to happen. We can't take them to a shelter because WE DON'T HAVE ONE! You have to be a resident of the neighboring county if you want to surrender a dog. Which we are not. I can't stand how everytime someone doesn't agree with the way OTHER people do things they throw in the ITS ILLEGAL or ANIMAL CRUELTY card. Yet they don't think drowning a coon is animal cruelty? Just because its a "predator" its not cruel to kill it in such a way? Right. We are human and not perfect. Sorry about the rant but this gets old.

I hear yea ravencreek, its like that hear as well, whats the words im lookin for( down to earth i believe,) not everything is perfect in this world,
times are gettin harder, not everyone has the $1000.00 of dallors to spend on a dog, and you shouldnt have to.

it sounds like a lot of you dont know what banding is, but want to make your opionion heard anyway.
Every calve, i have ever seen bawls when its in pain, (they never bawl when banded)
probably because the blood circulation is cut completly off, and it goes numb withen an hour

i dont believe Bob barker would have said remember to have your pets spayed and net. if it was animal cruality.
Dont forget the iodine, if you you do it

I'm just wondering where on earth you can get a dog fixed for $50???! I have a female that needs to be spayed (lucky me - the owners did the right thing and turned her over to me, but she is not spayed

). We have an electrical contracting business, and as we all know, construction isn't exactly booming, other wise I'd just call the vet and get her in there a week ago

!

Now to answer the question - I don't see why it couldn't be done, although that's not what I would do... Not that you care about what I would do

Good luck with your boy - hope all goes well

I can't imagine why it would be considered animal cruelty for a dog but not a calf or sheep? An animal is an animal, and this could be argued on a legal level. There are always complications that can arise with any method of neutering...even surgical.

I will tell you my experience with banding of cats. I used a sheep band for one tom and it worked beautifully, was not painful and produced wonderful results.

With the second tom, some time later, I could only get a calf band. Big mistake. It wasn't small enough and the testicles degloved eventually. They were infective and could have caused him to become ill. It did not but it could have. Truly a botched endeavor.

With neither case did either animal appear to be in any pain either during the process or during the interval it takes for the testicles to fall off. When the band is applied they seem startled but purred throughout the whole ordeal. They got up and strolled away to eat and drink and loll about on the porch. Decidedly NOT cruel.

Would I do it to my dog? Nope. I was able to get my dog neutered for FREE by the local animal shelter that had a government grant for such things. They were actually begging for large dogs in the area to be part of the program so they could get more funding for next year.

Would I do it to another cat? Maybe with a sheep band. Who knows?

Will I use banding on any male sheep or calves I get? Probably, unless one would experience a life threatening infection. Then I may change my mind about banding.

Can it be done? Yes. Are the results mixed? Yes. Is it cruel? Not the actual banding process....no. No more cruel than people who get their baby's ears pierced. Momentary discomfort, then numbness, from what I can tell. Unless it becomes infected.....then it may become painful.

This thread just makes me hurt.

Don't know why i've been coming back to it for hours.

There are lots of programs for low cost neutering around the Seattle area, but it may not be available in the more rural areas. Maybe you should look closer to a city, if that'll help. If you were closer to me I could get you a good rate.

Imp, Good luck

What about the way the old timers do the sheep....
Grab 'em, make a small slice with a sharp knife, and "bite"... well you know.

Momentary pain, then it's all over...
