My dog 'General aka G' is the best dog I could have ever imagined. I got him when he was 3 months old and his birthday is on the 28th in which he will be 6 years old. I got him when I was a senior in high school and he stood by my side all through college. Needless to say he is my best friend and the best dog 'to me at least'.
He loves to come fishing on my boat with me and while on the lake yesterday he tried to jump back onto the boat after playing on an island and he just didn't have enough height to clear the back of the boat and had to catch himself for just a second then hopped back off. Seemed just like a harmless attempt of getting on the boat but once we were back in the truck I saw his nail was missing but the quick was still there.
I noticed some bleeding last night so I bandaged him up 'not to tight so I wouldn't cut off circulation' but today he put pressure on it and then he yelped and it started bleeding again. I am on the fence about taking him to the vet because the nail is already basically completely removed besides a small sliver at the base and from everything I have read the vet would provide antibiotics, clean it and wrap it for $300. I have been out of college for 3 weeks and am Job hunting. I have some graduation money still left over but I was planning on using that to keep me afloat until I get hired. Needless to say I feel that I can provide the same service to G that a vet could 'for the most part at least'. I have been carrying him so he doesn't have to put pressure on it and he seems to enjoy it more than dislike since he can be a lazy dog. He enjoys laying around and is very mellow and he is also very smart as well as mature. If I put a bandage on he knows it's for a reason and won't take it off.
My only main concern is if the nail is broke of far enough back so that a vet wouldn't have to remove anymore as well as what is the best route to keeping it clean as well as any antibiotics I might should use if possible without a prescription from the vet.
If it's essential he goes to the vet I will definitely take him but it's like changing the oil in my truck, if I can do it and have the time to do it right why would I pay someone else to do it when I am short for money as it is.
He's like my child and means the world to me. He comes hunting, fishing, camping and sometimes even golfing with me. If someone could examine the pictures and give insight on what I should do it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Kristian
