Just caught my dog (anatolian/great pyr/border collie mix) munching on a chicken. He's been a chaser from day one. I've tried to work with him, but he's a tenacious 1 yr old. Now that I caught him, I broken chicken neck, slathered her in hot sauce and extra chily flakes, and tossed her out there to let him taste his kill. He took a taste and backed off right away. Just then I took him and shoved my slathered glove into his mouth to seal the deal. As secondary precaution, I've also sprayed the kill with bear spray and left it for him to sniff. Ill try to come back here to give an update, but as of now, he's not happy with the extra dose I shoved into his mouth. MAYBE he's got the picture? Pls don't try to advise, this is one that I've spent time on and my chickens will remain free range. Im just sharing, to hopefully give others some hope. TIA

As stated above your dog has 3/4 LGD ancestry and as such he is still just a toddler at one year old, only reaching full (mental) maturity around the age of 3-4 years.

Although I can understand your annoyance at finding him munching on the chicken, please reconsider and continue to work with him daily on a level that will match his mental development and capacity.

Can you be sure that it was him chasing and killing the bird? He might just have found it already dead and taken advantage of the situation...

You're trying to advise? Isn't advice something that you give to others because it worked for you? I know that this does not work. I free range my chickens too, I wouldn't tell you not to do that. But free ranging doesn't have to equal chickens and dogs you won't chicken train have to be together. A 1 year old is still a pup, you have to be patient and determined. Take him to a class with an actual trainer if you're not experienced.

What you did to that dog was 100% animal cruelty.

Rehome the dog since you insist your birds must be free ranging.
Why is it that people think everything is cruel. It wasnt like i Strapped him down and it wasnt really as much as perhaps you might perceive. It was enough that he got a good taste and is learning that we need to live together as a pack. Ever watched wolves teach the pack? Thats all it was, just did it the human way rather than straddle him and bite his ear. We are a pack, but I am the alpha.

Yhx, yes he was guilty as I walked out with it in his mouth. And Yes, I continue to work with him. We've got lots of years, this was just a line that had to be etched for his safety and my sanity. We go into the yard and sit by the now slathered/dead chicken and talk. He sits, listens and looks at it. He knows its not a good chase. Thank you.
