Hi! We recently bought some double silver laced barnevelders and moss Eggers from an online hatchery. They shipped fine and all were alive upon arrival. They arrived one week ago from today. However, we have had an extremely high mortality rate with the barnevelders. They are in the same brooder as the moss eggers, eating the same food and drinking the same water. We are losing at least 1 and sometimes 2 barnevelders A DAY. They are in our house with no other animals around. I temped the box yesterday and it was reading around 96°. Any suggestions what might be causing this one breed to fail?

Is there a range of temps in the brooder so the chicks can get to a cooler area if they get too warm? Are you checking daily for pasty butt? Can you post a pic of your setup? Maybe we will see something we can advise on. Sorry about your difficulties and losses.

There is a range in temp. I will say they used to be in a plastic tote, it was huge like 4ft by 2 ft but my husband said maybe something with the plastic might be affecting their oxygen so then last night I switched them to a cardboard box but we still lost one overnight. We are checking daily for pasty butt and my children are so excited that, "mom! None of the chicks are having pasty butt" haha they tell me everyday. 🤣 I can post a pic tonight.

I have raised several clutches in plastic totes like that with no issues, but not this particular breed. I hope we can figure this out before you lose any more!
