Hello.

I am very new to all of this - thank you
For any patience needed. Also, I am typing on my Phone somewhat quickly - please pardon any weird words and grammar mishaps.:)
Will try to give as
Much info as possible- could be lengthy 🙃

Lily is one of 5 RI Reds. She seems to go through bouts with not feeling well (as iwill describe) periodically (every 4-6 months).

This is about her third or fourth time not feeling well. It first starts out with her seeming a little off- spacey- slower in her expressions like she might be day dreaming . In the past she lifts up one foot and looks At it a lot. As if there is something onit- but we cannot sure it. This time I didn’t notice her
doing this with her foot as much.
Each time in the past her comb does flop to the side and the tips blacken. But then once she gets better it returns Tia vibrant healthy red.,

The pointed tips
Of her comb are blackened this time as welll.

A few days ago the red part of her comb looked Like
It was beginning to get lighter / fad… now it seems it is becoming more red again.
The tips are still dark but i keep
Questioning if it is that the darkness is subsiding a sliver. It sort of looks it…but very subtle.

She will be 2 years old this spring.
Originally There were 6 ladies but one of them died suddenly- possibly almost a year ago.

Whe I first noticed she seemed to be a little off I continued keeping my eye on her and putting vetRX under her wings once I noticed the comb starting to darken. (One of the other times she was not well- a farmer friend suggested the VetRX as he thought she may have a respiratory infection)……

Back to present day-
About 4 days after noticing something seemed to be off with her- I went to close up the pen for the night time and Lily was still outside -at the bottom of
The ramp to get into the pen.
I think she couldn’t make it
Up and stayed where she landed.
she was very lethargic. We Live inNew England- It was dark and very cold that night.

For better or worse- I brought her into our basement and set up a little
Space for her and started the wood stove.
I kept her warm for two days and gave her water via syringe. I tried to give her egg but she didn’t want it. In the past I could get her to eat with egg.

i started syringing her food but it took me a little bit to figure that part out.
I didn’t have the best syringes.
Anyways,,,, my system now is- I put her chicken food in warm water for whatever her needed nutrients are from that - I add egg- a little
Thyme - oregano. Tiny garlic and ginger sometimes.
This morning I began adding a very slight slight pinch or cayenne and gave her a sliver of plain yogurt.

Ok - jumping back a little.
Whe. I first took her in she was
Lethargic.
Since then she seems
To be
Much more spry. She accepts
The food and water
From me and tells me
When she had had enough- or if I am going to fast.

She perks up with it.

Her eyes do close
Sometimes - a white sheath covering-her feathers puff and she
Seems like she is in rest ora
Dormant state.

But then she is also very
Alert and curious- sparks ip- tunes intto sounds , voices, and light and shadow.
Tilting her head-
Looking listening.

By the next day of bringing her into the basement - her intake
Consists of the following through via syringe:
tea with nettles, astragalus, thyme and Oregano
Steel cut outs with pinch of
Cinnamon.
Mushed egg
Chicken food with water
Vet Rx drops in water and under wings.
ACV in water.
Meal worms
Also- tiny bits of kale
Parsley and or cilantro here and there.

Also- I am putting electrolytes and probiotics in hers and her sisters’water .

After about day two - I reached out to a friend because she has raised chickens for many years— 40-100..

She shared with me that via her experience- chickens can be mysterious.
She encouraged me to continue to do what iwas doing.
She brought me some Corid- told me it is specific for one thing and if Lily didn’t have this it wouldn’t help with anything else but if Lily doesn’t seem like she’s getting better it may be worth to try it.
I think it’s Lily’s third day that she is having the Corid inher water via syringe.
According the the instructions- I put 3/8teaspoonon in 4 cups of water.

Also- As a result of our conversation I changed my thinking with lily’s basement situation.
I tookLily
Outside a few times over a two day period to help reacclimate her to the weather and I stopped running the wood stove- kept the basement cooler.
Now I bring her to the pen and coop to be home with her sisters during the day and I the cool basement at night. Since she is not walking well I can keep an eye that she’s not in a precarious situation and I am continue to keep her hydrated via the string more easily.

Her sisters seem to be not giving her any trouble.
the first day I poured the feed with the meal worms close toLily and they all came over to eat - Lily joined in.
This was the first time since her being sick that I saw her feed on her own.

Since then- it
Seems
Like she wants to join in with them for the eating and digs in a little
But then just watches.

My partner said he noticed her ther other day by the water drinking some.
I have not seen this.

I see her walk toward it but then her wings drop and she lands on it and just stays there (like when I first saw her the night I took her in).

He said he watched her and she did drink.

So yes- this seems to be the biggest thing. Lily seems in many ways- like she is moving toward feeling better …. But I have no idea if this is the case.
She stands up more and more and goes to walk it after about three steps her wings drop and she goes down to the ground.
Also- here tail feathers are down- tucked. This is what not seems to be changing . Although I do feel she stands up more

Re: her poop::::
Her poop at first was more yellow and liquify.
It seems to be more brown now and ad have a bit
More substance -less thin but no formation. I find it on the towels and fabric - soread, this
Mornings poop looked
Like spread thick coffee - grinds.

My partner usually
Cleans out the coop- up until now I hadn’t really spent a lot of time looking at their poops.I see it every day
but just glance at it.
Moving forward- Now I am really looking.

Don’t think I have said this yet.
She hasn’t laid any eggs in a long while. We seem to be getting only one egg a day from the ladies. It is not from Lily.

I was going to get some oyster shell to add to all of their food ( including Lily’s) but wanted to ask here first.

I am having trouble
Withmy
Phone camera but if I am get it to work will add some
Pictures soon.

Thank you so very much for your time.
I appreciate any insights to be shared or questions for me to consider.

Wishing you and all of your beloved ladies well.

Me again,,,,,, want to add to my
prior post re: Lily.
Her eyes seem clear. Most of the time looks at me
Clearly and directly when I feed her.She does it appear to have discharge in her eyes or nostrils.

Qs:
With everything I am feeding her and giving her (Corid, herbs etc) is it safe to add an antibiotic- or do any of these contraindicate? If safe wonderin g if the recommendation would be to give her an antiobiotic?…. Then that leads to - - which one and where can I get it?

Thankyou again. Apologies for the lengthiness of my prior post. I wanted to include as much info as possible. 🙃

Some things I picked up...

Don't put the oyster shell in their feed. Put it in a separate dish and those that need more calcium will eat it. Otherwise, you could be overdosing the ones that have enough already from their feed.

I presume they are on some type of layer feed or all-flock?

I did not hear you mention vitamins. I would put Poultry Cell in their water every other day for a week or two and see if that brings her around. You could also give her 1/2 of a B-Complex vitamin per day for an extra boost if you have any. They are inexpensive.

Vet RX is like human Vicks. It does nothing really to heal, but it may make us feel better.

Nothing you're doing contradicts with antibiotics that I've heard of. I used Amoxicilan 125 mg every 12 hours for a week for a silkie of mine who couldn't knock a cold a couple of years ago. That worked. Many use Tylan 50 too I've seen.

Jedds or Twin City Poultry are two places where you can get antibiotics.

Thank you for all of this info Debbie and for taking the time to share it.
Re: oyster shell::::will do. With regards to Lily , who I am currently feeding through a syringe- it sounds best not to give her any right now then since the syringe doesn’t necessarily support this.

I jist looked up the Poultry Cell- is it called ROOSTER BOOSTER POULTRY CELL?

Re: vitaminB - there are usually different dosages do you have any sense what range to stay in ? If not ,,, no prob- I will look around at the store and stay on the low to mid range.

Thank you for clarifying!

More questions Re: my Lily post:::::

I’m at the store and seeing something called Patchy “- supports healthy skin and feather function”” . My guess is that it is more
Complex than this , but wondering if something like this could’ve helpful for her tucked feather tails
And dropped wings?

Thanks
Again
