DUCK EGG CRACKED WITH NO PIP (MAYBE DEAD)

Hi! This is my first time hatching duck eggs - I have two duck eggs that I’m incubating right now, both of them were a week old and fertile when I got them.

Today is around day 26. One of the eggs might be dead now because I didn’t see any movements/there was a lot of air sacs that were moving around. It also had a weird smell. I decided to still keep the maybe “dead” egg in the incubator because like I said this is my first time hatching duck eggs so I wasn’t sure. The other egg seems to be fine though.

I checked on the eggs this morning - the probably “dead” egg had cracked. I wasn’t sure why, if it was hatching I would’ve heard a pip, but I didn’t hear any sound coming from the egg. I attached a picture of the crack.

I’m still going to keep it on the incubator since the hatching date is in two days, so I’m going to see if it might still be alive.

Any suggestions? Why did the egg crack? I thought it was dead. Why are there so much air sacs/bubbles? Thank you!

Be careful. Sometimes bad eggs will explode in the incubator with built up gases and nastiness. I have not hatched duck eggs but all other eggs always have a pip not a crack, I think. And the egg should be darker inside if something was in it that was about to hatch in a couple of days. I would get that egg out if it was mine.

Edit to say: especially if there is a weird smell coming from it!!

There is a dark spot inside the egg, I thought that would be the duck. The air sacs move to the top of the egg when i turn it, so you can’t really see the dark spot. Thank you!

Update - The crack is getter longer!

That egg is bad. If you don’t have another incubator to put it in, I suggest removing it. The crack is being caused by the gas build up and will explode once possible.
Thank you for the suggestion, today is day 28, when the other duck egg hatches, I will remove the bad one.

I threw away the egg! I’m still not sure why it died though 🤔 I gave it constant heat and humidity and the other egg is still alive. The bad egg smell was getting so bad that I had to throw it away. It also started leaking some liquid through the cracks. Thank you for all the suggestions!
