Duck Pond Ideas

A bilge pump would work, just get one big enough to empty the tank fairly quickly, unless you don't mind waiting around for it to empty. Cleaning is pretty straight forward with a scrubber/ squeegee and long handle pan (keeps you from having to bend over so much)

The best pump for this would be a "solids" or "trash" pump. These pumps are made to handle sewage if need be, and resist clogging with the mud and trash ducks will put in the pond. You can find them in big box stores or even Harbor Freight. "Clear water" pumps are not made for these conditions.

We use a 1/2 hp sump pump hooked to a garden hose. It gets a lot of the sludge at the bottom if you stir it at the end of pumping. (Yes, it’s gross) We use one of those dust pan scoops on a handle and a hoe to finish up the sticks and mud at very bottom. Usually takes about half hour, but we’re pumping uphill through a 100 foot hose to direct the water where we want it. It’s a 100 gallon tank...

You can find bigger pumps that will go quicker, but we like that this one attaches to garden hose.

I use the pump in the link below which keeps the tank clean for about a week with 4 ducks. I swear by the UV clarifier. My stock tank is only 70 gallons though - it's just a 'bath' for them since they also have access to a pond in our yard. I don't use a pump to empty it - i just put the hose in and drain it to whatever flower bed or part of the garden needs a little boost ;)

Totally been planning and researching this topic as well. It's been 2 weeks sense we got ducks and iI' already tired of cleaning kiddie pool and the small tub they have daily. If you search "kio ponds" there is a ton of great ideas out there. I plan on using a pond pump to push water into a diy filter system made from 2 - 55 gallon blue barrels. ( I happen to have 5 here on the property.) First one will be a simple swirl filter set up to let large debris and objects settle to bottom of the barrel. Second barrel will be biological filter made simply by passing water from bottom of barrel to the top thru ether plastic medium or valcanic rocks that good bateria grows on. Just google "diy 55 gallon barrel pond filter" there are so many easy set ups. I will make a post when I tackle this I'm half way thru perment coop build.

I so need help with this topic! I built a skippy filter system with a large rubbermaid tote. I put bacteria in to breakdown the waste. My biggest challenge is the pump. I've burned up two not-real-cheap pumps because of the sludge that builds up in the small pond.

The second pump took a dump a couple days ago and I'm looking at duck poop soup.

I have two Pekin ducks and not a lot of room for a large pond. I am searching posts but if any of you more experienced duck daddies (and mommies) have any suggestions I'm open to reading them.
