Duck Water

I've been reading on several sites about people using used duck water on their vegetable gardens as liquid fertilizer. Is this okay? Isn't there a risk of salmonella? I compost my chicken's poo for a year before using it, but I don't really know what to do with all the water from the duck pool and water bowls that they bathe and poop in.. besides just dump them in the grass. If I can use the waste water in the garden, I would love to, but not at the risk of my family's health. Please confirm or ease my fears if you can!

We each need to be comfortable with what we do, I respect your questions.

For me, I use duck poo in the compost pile, as a tea in the garden (including vegetables)*, for the flower garden, for perennials.....

You can have your ducks' manure tested. If I were concerned about salmonella, I would find out if they have it or not.

We have never had any trouble with using the duck manure.

I put that asterisk* up there to point out that there are safe ways to use manure in the garden. And there are hundreds of resources for learning about that.

When we used a pool, it was next to my veggie garden. Best garden I have had here. Never an issue. I watered the ground, not the plant. And veggies were washed after harvest.

I have used it on my flowers or trees but not my veggies. You could wash your veggies before eatin them too.

Chicken poop is "hot" so it will damage vegetation if it is not aged first. Duck poop can be used straight because it is not hot enough to burn vegetation. Watered down duck poop is excellent fertilizer. We use it on plants that produce food, like tomato plants, but not directly on food plants, like lettuce. We also use worm lechate on our soil but not on food. We don't even bother composting our used chicken coop bedding because it takes so long to break down the chicken poop and shavings. We water down the grass where the chickens poop but their poop will burn the grass if it is not cleaned frequently. The ducks are far less maintenance than the chickens and they are more beneficial to our yard and garden.

I was wondering about this recently, too. But in reading through different places, it seems quite safe to add duck poop/soup to veggie garden beds, just keep from pouring it over the actual veggies. Since finding this out, I've simply been dumping my ducklings' poop and bedding around the seedlings right before watering. Their bedding is mostly straw anyway, so it'll all be turned under for mulch/compost after harvest.
