Hello All - I have both chickens & ducks. A few weeks ago I was asked if I would mind taking on a couple ducklings that a grandmother had bought for her grandkids, and it didn't work out that they could keep them. Since I already had a few ducks of my own, I took them in. I have NO idea what they had been fed previously (I received them at about 5 weeks old). I gave them duck starter crumbles and also for a short time a little chick starter crumbles (non-medicated), making sure to add brewer's yeast to each feeding (with both the duck and chicken crumbles). Early on I noticed one duck was a little more uncoordinated. I increased the brewer's yeast, and added some hand-crumbled duck treats that included dried shrimp, etc. As the ducks grew and gained weight, the one duck's walking worsened. (The other duck has grown and remained fine, by the way). Around 8 weeks of age I figured the extra niacin wasn't working, so I took the lame duck to the vet. Blood tests for zinc or lead poisoning were done (since we didn't really know their early environment, and what they may have consumed). At the time the vet said the problems appeared to be neurological, that the duck doesn't seem to know where his feet are. So we waited for the results of the tests, which eventually came back negative. So it was deemed that it was probably a neurological problem he was born with, and he would just learn how to live with it. I do trust my vet to know that it is a neurological issue, but I was disappointed to hear that there pretty much wasn't any hope....so just believing that MAYBE a little more niacin would help, every morning for 2 weeks I separated him out and gave him a can of tuna mixed with some brewer's yeast and peas. After 2 weeks I was not noticing any difference.
so I figured niacin must not be the problem I guess... Anyhow, a few weeks later my poor duck has gained more weight (probably at/near adult weight), and now he just hobbles around. As he has grown, his legs seem to grow a little more swollen than normal, probably due to him not walking around on his feet
.... I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions/ideas to help make his life a little easier. Thank you in advance!
