Ducks are so funny

I just wanted to share some things my ducks do that make me happy or that I find funny. Some of my family do not think they are as entertaining as I do so I figured I was in good company here......

Tonight I got home from work when it was after dark. When I went to put them up for the night, they were right outside the shed I keep them in. The door to the shed was open and had a dim night light so they knew exactly where it was. Once I walked up to the shed, they waddled right in. I just laughed that they were waiting for me to tuck them in! Lol.

I also dumped and refilled their pool today. I have a Pekin, black swedish, and cayugas. My Husband called to tell me at work that my Pekin was disgusting. She had mud caked all over her face and chest from nicely making holes in my yard for planting bulbs.:lau All the rest of the ducks were playing in the mud right along with her but it’s just so much more noticeable on her white feathers. I wish I had a picture of the little piglet because she’s so funny when she’s filthy!

Have any funny stories?

Greetings CayugaJana,

I really enjoyed reading this post. It's a nice way to end my hard day.

When I was a child my mom had ducks and geese. She loved them so much. I remember my dad bringing this huge, square oil drainage pan, from work. It was intended for draining oil from trains. He was a mechanic for Sante Fe railroad. Anyways, my mom said, "I don't want my babies in that filthy thing. Get rid of it".

The next day, I heard all kinds of quacking and carrying on out back. When I looked out the window to see what all the commotion was about, there they were. All of my moms ducks and the two geese zipping around that huge square pan.

My dad had the pan steam cleaned at work and returned with a duck pool! My mom was so happy. I can still remember her laughing so hard, at those funny ducks, zipping and splashing around in the water.

Your right, ducks are so funny!

I love watching them zip around in the water! It’s one of my favorite things to see them do. My husband and I were watching them swim in fresh water the other day and a drake got a little to happy. He zoomed so fast under the water that he fell out of the other side and landed on his head with his butt stuck in the air. We both laughed so hard. It seems like there is less and less innocent and good entertainment these days and I thoroughly enjoy them. :hugs

We have a sisterhood of white muscovy ducks, and they believe they run the barnyard. About a month ago, I was outside, creeping on my chicks (sorry, watching my chicks) when I noticed my flock of standard chickens were headed for the henhouse.

Only the muscovies were between them and the henhouse.

Well, the flock mills around a bit, and then the rooster decides that he's headed towards that henhouse, and no ducks are going to stop him. So he clucks to his hens and sets off.

The ducks shuffle a bit so they're squarely in his road and start bobbing their heads a bit, watching him and peeping to each other. He pauses, looks uncertain--and then continues onwards.

One duck leans forward and snaps at him.

He jumps back a bit, flustered now, and sort of looks at her sideways. Then he tries to pass her again. This time, he loses feathers.

Now he's a pretty even tempered boy, but by this point he's beginning to get a little upset. He's got all his girls behind him, after all, watching and waiting on their big, handsome rooster to lead them to the coop. So he sets one wing in the dust and circles a bit--and then tries to walk past them again.

The girls are peeping and bobbing their heads, and one leans out and snatches more feathers--and he decides he's had it. He puffs up his neck feathers and jumps!

And right in front of his girls, two ducks proceed to go right back at him, wings beating and heads bobbing with their sister cheering them on from the back, and the rooster--well, right in front of his hens, chicks, the bantams, and me, he's forced to stage a most undignified retreat.

And the girls gather back together and just bob their heads and peep indignantly. The nerve of that boy, they say.

Well, we have Khaki Campbells and Rouens, but it is the KCs that are the complete comedians....and my favorite....we have 1 that was the smallest when we got them as day olds and has remained a bit smaller....so, we call her Lil Bit....this is her coming out of the pool.... IMAG2713.jpg ...when they were about 6wks old she was so small she could fly up about 4-5' off the ground and we had changed their water tub out for a concrete mixing tub and filled it up....after a couple of days of getting used to it, we let them out of their pen into their yard and she ran, jumped, and flew as bigh as she could get and dove into the tub and zoomed around it 2-3 times underwater....it was really hilarious...one of those ya wish ya had a video of....:lau

Lol! It’s like I was there seeing it while I was reading! :lau

I love how they talk to each other like that. You can just tell they are telling a dramatic story.

I’ve never TRULY understood the saying “birds of the same feather flock together “ until I got ducks.

Thanks for sharing your stories with us, I too am loving being a duck momma of 18 ducks, I have 3 big kiddie pools and a large mud area that they love to play in. When I go out every day to drain and fill the waters and the pools I get the most wonderful welcome calls ever... They can't wait for me to get done before making the big splashing, swimming and diving under the water ducky dance. I sell eggs and when anyone that buys eggs goes near the duck play yard they are quiet and just stand still like they can't be seen, Then I say out of their sight swimming in the big kids pool and oh boy they know it's play time and moms here to protect us. They are the funniest feathered babies I have ever had!

We used to have a more aggressive drake and he liked to charge my husband but only when his back was to him. If the hubs faced him while he was charging, he would change gears really fast and look at him like “hum de hum hum.... who me? I wasn’t attacking you! You must have mistaken me for someone else!”
