Dukes Dog proof raccoon trap

Maybe these traps work too well. 4 nights of trapping with 3 traps and I caught...

Night 1- 3 raccoons
Night 2- 3 raccoons
Night 3- 1 raccoon and 1 opposum
Night 4- 1 raccoon and 1 skunk (and avoided getting sprayed)

My neighbors just got some pekin ducks and only has them in a dog kennel with no top and nothing to stop digging predators. Hopefully my trapping with help keep those ducks alive a little longer.

I'm debating on keeping the traps out all the time just for the neighbor's ducks.

I found out this morning that the Duke traps aren't skunk proof as I'd hoped. How'd you get your skunk out? I just popped mine with the .22 and I'll wait a few days to remove it.

Also saw a fox running away from the traps this morning. Guess I need to put out the regular traps baited with some bobcat piss.

Other than the skunk, the Duke traps have been working well.

HAHA, got a phone call from the wife this a.m. complaining of skunk smell. I thought the 1/4 mile would be enough and the wind was blowing to the West this morning, not the South. OOps. Guess I don't get to wait a couple of days for the smell to die down before handling that smelly thing.

After some research on what wat the best way to kill a skunk and not get sprayed... I went with a 12 gauge with bird shot at about 10 feet away

. It did not spray, smell was minimal.

12ga Huh? It can't be any worse than what I'm already doing. I'll give it a shot(pun intended

) and let ya know how it goes.

I have shot a bunch of skunks, mostly with .22 or .22 magnum. Some spray, some don't. I read/heard years ago that trappers would try to lung shoot them and they would not spray, but would die quickly/peacefully. Back when I was in high school, skunks had found a knothole in the side of our chickenhouse (broiler house) and would stick its paw in and catch/kill a little chick (or however many came near enough). A steel trap placed right by the hole was rather effective at catching them. Dispatching them and disposing of them was not so simple. My dad would shoot them with a 12 gauge, birdshot, and I don't guess one ever sprayed. It fell to me one morning and I was not so fortunate. I shot him from about 25', the shot rolled him over, and I saw the stream a milli-second before the stench slapped me in the face, as I was directly downwind. Lesson learned!

Not long ago, I shot one out in the yard one night with a .22 magnum. My daughter and I walked out to it to make sure it was dead. We got within 10' of him before smelling him, and then it was rather mild. When we walked back in the house though, my wife requested that we shower, ASAP! We sleep with the windows quite often, and they walk across the yard and disturb a good night's sleep frequently.

Well It's been 2 weeks since I caught anything in my traps. I went with the strawberry marshmellows that I've seen recommended on here, after about 1 week, I replaced the old ones, they were stale and had been rained on. Another week later and I was thinking I had been duped. Great Joke on me. HAHA. Acutally I've been meaning to change the bait for a couple of days.

I checked the traps this morning because I didn't want to be cruel just in case something was in there, and I had not 1 but 2 coons trapped only 10ft from each other. Gotta say, I'm really happy with these traps.
