We will be adding more chickens to our flock and need to expand our run. Our last one’s roofing didn’t hold up completely to snow and sagged really bad so I’m starting from scratch and redoing it all. But lumber is soooo expensive right now.

Today I found a person who is selling 3x4x8 dunnage boards for $5.00 each. Would this work to build a run out of or would it just rot away quickly? I plan on building a wooden frame with fencing/hardware cloth sides and a polycarbonate roof or metal roof with a single slant.

Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you.

Dunnage board are just fine. They come from various trees, and are usually hardwoods. The boards need to be stronger than pine lumber. Only time they would rot,,, would be ground contact. If you would use as posts, you can prevent that by coating the portion that will be buried,, with tar.
