Two of my flock have green and yellow diarrhea. I did a test on one through RSA tested for mycoplasma, salmonella and E. coli. Test was positive for E. coli. Symptoms match

Ruffled feathers, depression, Less feed intake, coughing, and change of voice in lameness. Symptoms for 2 weeks. Vet did blood work and found nothing. When the green diarrhea happened I decided to use rsa, got results in less than 24 hours. I intend to treat on my own with combined approach.

I did some research and implemented some of the protocols of natural treatment, oregano oil in water, activated charcoal and I have thyme arriving today.

I also have enfroflaxin (Baytril) and want to start that. However there are restrictions on that. Is there an approved antibiotic for E. coli?

One is showing signs of sepsis, (lameness) what is a good treatment protocol?

What is the dilution of thyme?

My reading shows this must be treated with multiple tools. If you have any advise, please let me know.

Sorry about your hen. It sounds like she may have coelomitis (egg yolk peritonitis) from salpingitis. Enrofloxacin which is banned for chickens by the FDA, is still sometimes prescribed or used for reproductive infections. It does treat E.coli. I would not use her eggs or wait for at least a month, but an antibiotic like this is used to save her life. Dosage is 10 mg per kilogram (each 2.2 pounds of weight) given orally every 12 hours for 5 days. Jedds.com sells the 10 mg tablets and the 10% liquid. I can’t help with the other dosages. If you have a vet you might get it quicker than a week that it may take in shipping. I can’t help with the herbal dosages. If you should lose her, most state vets will do a necropsy to get a reason for her infection. I hope that she improves.

Thanks so much. I have the liquid Baytril on hand. And I have tri sulfa otw tomorrow. I’m starting Baytril today but can switch to tri sulfa tomorrow if that does not have the ban.

Also, you helped with my red hen. I thought it was vitamin deficiency (lameness) but doc did blood and found septicemia. Gave antibiotics and she’s doing better they did not know what bacteria, but the tests I got back yesterday show negative for E. coli, salmonella, and mycoplasma so she’s likely cleared it.

Problem is, I was giving her brewers yeast for the vitamin deficiency, and likely that caused sour crop. (No smell, but squishy crop) I’m giving nystatin, but the standard protocol is to not feed for a day. I could not do that cause she was all bones (she’s not eating, I’m torpedo feeding) the crop is smaller now. Today is day 3 on the nystatin. Is now a good time to withhold food to clear it out?

Hi there - I’m so sorry to hear you’re going through this too. I am going through something very similar in my flock… I have lost two girls so far, a necropsy on one tested positive for E. Coli as well. Did the antibiotics you used help? Also do you mind sharing more about the RSA testing you mentioned - is that something that can be done without a vet?

I have a feeling several of my other girls are going through trying to clear the infection (even after 7 days of Tylan powder) and I’m just trying to support them as best as I can. It’s very stressful and upsetting, as you know.
