Early sexing of EEs by pea combs: is it size, clarity of 3 rows, or color?

We just had our first heartbreak of parting with a cockerel we were all attached to, and I'm anxious about remaining cockerels in our sexed pullets. Some of them are EEs, and after going through the many threads on sexing EEs, I'm still not clear on what information the comb gives in this regard. Is it:
* how soon you can see 3 clear rows?
* how vibrant the color is early on at 4 weeks or so?
I have a couple of EEs with very defined 3-row pea combs at 4 weeks, one of which is not quite red, but is definitely brighter than any other comb in the brooder. *bites nails*

The three rows of peas thing isn't accurate as females may have them as well.
