I just received some Isbar hatching eggs. Most are green but a few are brown. My research shows this as a fault that goes back to the RIR foundation breedings. I will just be keeping them as layers so no worries of passing the gene on, but what is the chance of a Isbar chick hatched from a brown egg laying the green egg correct for the breed?

Chicks hatched from the brown eggs can lay green eggs if the father carried the blue egg gene. If the father has 2 copies of the blue gene, the chicks will lay a green egg. If the father has one copy of the blue egg gene, the could lay a brown or green egg.

Hi! Mind sharing where you received the eggs?

I found them on ebay & chose them because the seller was within driving distance. Plus he had OE eggs too which I wanted. I will keep you posted on fertility if you're interested in contacting them.

I was wondering if you received them from American River Farms because they sold us tan ones too.

Yes- that is correct. I got a set of the green and I also got a mixed dozen of multiple breeds/crosses that has some of the brown. But I knew I was getting them based on our eBay messaging.

I'm new to Isbars so just trying to get the egg genetics figured out so I know what to expect.

Sounds like what I did with them. Hope you have better luck than I did. Getting tan eggs could mean that both parents are carrying the tan egg gene, so these babies won’t be good for breeding (unfortunately, I found out later). Only one green egg hatched (cockerel) and 3-4 of the 4 tan eggs that hatched are cockerels as well. The black one that is most likely a pullet has copper/red leakage and birchen feathering coming in. The first characteristic is an undesirable trait, and the second is not preferred. Check our this chart put together by breeders!

You would think that after 70 years of breeding this would have been bred out. I would say that it's unacceptable and even negligent to keep breeding from such stock. Chances are that these are just the result of a project breeding program and were sold as true Isbars

Multiple people have talked to the owners of that farm. 😔 I was (am) new, so I wish I knew better. At 5 lost weeks of time, love, and energy!!
